4) I already own the original version of DA: Origins and/or Awakening.  I just bought the Ultimate Edition.  Do I need to uninstall the old game(s) first?
5) If I previously owned the Deluxe Collector's Edition of Origins, and I upgrade to Ultimate Edition, will my bonus items (Grimoire of the Frozen Wastes, Final Reason, Bergen's Honor) still be available?
6) If I have installed Origins or Awakening using a disc, do I need to have the disc in the drive to launch the game?
7) I got an error message about missing Visual C++ files.  What do I do?
8) I got an error message about a missing DirectX 9 file (example: d3dx9_36.dll).  What do I do?
9) I get an error saying I need to install PhysX.  What do I do?[/b]
10) I’ve tried the stand-alone installer and I STILL get the PhysX error message.  Now what?
11) I got an error saying the game could not find a supported graphics card.  Now what?
12) I purchased Ultimate Edition from Impulse (digital download).  When I launch the game, it fails to load, and it returns to the launcher screen.  Can I fix this?
13) I have the Steam version of DA:O (or Ultimate Edition) and it thinks I am running the game in “Compatibility Mode”.  When I go to play the game, it cycles back to the launcher.  How do I fix this?[/b]

----------------------------------------

1) What do I do if I’ve damaged my disc and cannot install the game?
You have the option of using your CD key to download a digital copy of the game using Electronic Arts' Origin client (Yes, confusingly, both EA's digital download service and the first Dragon Age game both use the word "Origin"!).  You can read more and download the Origin client at http://www.origin.com/us/about

Note: If you have the stand-alone copies of both Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age: Awakening, it is recommended that you use the Origin download service for both.  If you install one using Origin and the other using a disc, the game may still try to perform a disc check at start-up.

2) What do I do if I lost my CD Key?
Go to help.ea.com, click on “Talk to a Game Advisor”, and log in.  Follow the instructions to discuss your problem with EA Customer Support.

3) I have both Origins and Awakening (stand-alone versions).  In what order do I install and patch them?

* Install Origins -- DO NOT LAUNCH
* Install Awakening -- DO NOT LAUNCH
* Install Patch 1.05
* Restart your computer
* Launch the game, log in, and let it install the DLC.
* Play and enjoy

4) I already own the original version of DA: Origins and/or Awakening.  I just bought the Ultimate Edition.  Do I need to uninstall the old game(s) first?
Yes!  Failing to do so may cause significant problems. For best results, uninstall the original version of the game, reboot, and then install UE.  If you have already installed UE *without* installing the original version first, you may have to do a complete uninstall, clean out the old registry keys, and reinstall Ultimate Edition from scratch!

5) If I previously owned the Deluxe Collector's Edition of Origins, and I upgrade to Ultimate Edition, will my bonus items (Grimoire of the Frozen Wastes, Final Reason, Bergen's Honor) still be available?
Yes, although they will not be installed with Ultimate Edition. You'll need to add them as DLC using the in-game interface.  Information on manually downloading and installing DLC (including those DLC items that came with the Deluxe Collector's Edition) is available at the Dragon Age Wiki.  Note: DLC must still be authorized in-game, so if you don't have the original rights to certain promotional items, they will not be usable, even if manually installed.

6) If I have installed Origins or Awakening using a disc, do I need to have the disc in the drive to launch the game?
Yes.  If either Origins or Awakening is installed by disc, the game will perform a check to see if the disc is in the drive at start-up.  Those who purchased the game(s) on disc have the option to install it using EA's Origin digital download client.  See entry #1 of this FAQ (above).

7) I got an error message about missing Visual C++ files.  What do I do?
Run Windows Update and look for the Visual C++ package, usually under “Optional Updates”.  Or, go to Microsoft’s website and download the installer for your version of Windows at: http://www.microsoft...ang=en#filelist

8) I got an error message about a missing DirectX 9 file (example: d3dx9_36.dll).  What do I do?
Dragon Age should install all the necessary Dx9 files along with the game.  You can, however, update DirectX 9 using the installer from Microsoft’s website at:  http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en

Note:  Even if you have a version of Windows that runs DirectX 11 (like Win 7), you will still need to have an updated version of Dx9 to play Dragon Age: Origins.  Both versions of DirectX can run on your system at the same time.

9) I get an error saying I need to install PhysX.  What do I do?
PhysX is required to play Dragon Age: Origins and the game should install it if needed.  You can also install it manually by downloading and running the stand-alone installer from Nvidia’s website:  http://www.nvidia.co...513-driver.html

For Steam users, you may have to manually move the PhysX loader from the default installation folder (C:\\Program Files (x86)\\NVIDIA Corporation\\PhysX\\Common) into the Steam game folder (D:\\...steam..\\dragon age origins\\bin_ship\\).

Note:  Even if you have an ATI graphics card, you’ll need PhysX to run the game.  DAO forces PhysX to run on the CPU, not on the graphics card.

10) I’ve tried the stand-alone installer and I STILL get the PhysX error message.  Now what?
On very rare occasions, it’s possible that Windows is not giving your Windows User Account access to the PhysX resources. This can be done with CAREFUL editing of the Windows registry.  WARNING:  Do this only if you have advanced computer experience...

*Back up the Windows registry.
*Click the “Start” button, select “Run” and type regedit.  (For Win 7 users, you can click “Start” and type regedit into the Start Menu search bar).
*Expand the category called “HKEY Local Machine”
*Expand the category called “Software”
*Locate “AGEIA Technologies” and RIGHT-CLICK on it.
*Select “Permissions...”
*Click on the “Advanced” button
*Go to the “Owner” tab
*Select the current Windows User Account from the list, put a check mark in “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects” and click “OK”
*Back on the Permissions menu, select your Window User Account
*Next to “Full Control”, put a check mark under “Allow”.  Click “OK”
*Close the Registry Editor
===> Thanks to user “falinor” for posting this from EA Customer Support.

11) I got an error saying the game could not find a supported graphics card.  Now what?
DA:O requires either an Nvidia or ATI video card.  For complete system requirements, click here

Intel graphics cards on-board graphics chips are NOT supported by the game.  If you have one, you may not be able to install the game, or the game may not behave properly on first launch.

If you DO have a Nvidia or ATI graphics card, and it meets the minimum specifications, try uninstalling and reinstalling your display drivers in Windows “Safe Mode”.

12) I purchased Ultimate Edition from Impulse (digital download).  When I launch the game, it fails to load, and it returns to the launcher screen.  Can I fix this?
Yes!  Thanks to forum user “Syrra C”.  WARNING:  This requires some registry editing.  Back up your registry first!

* Launch Impulse
* Right-click the DA:O game
* Select "View Registration"
* click "Copy serial to clipboard"
* Go to start menu and type "regedit" and hit return
* navigate to (or search for): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Wow6432Node\\Electronic Arts\\Dragon Age\\ergc
* In the right hand pane, double-click "(Default)" to open the entry field
* Hit Shift + Insert (quick-paste the clipboard) then click "Okay"
* Close registry
* re-launch the game launcher and go into the Configuration to verify it shows your cd key in the "Game" section and references DA:O
* Launch the game and log in
* Verify the DLC is now authorized
* Log out and recheck to make sure it is still authorized
* Exit game completely, then re-launch
* Make sure you are still logged out and check the DLS page again to make sure it is still authorized.
* Congratulations...you should be set.

13) I have the Steam version of DA:O (or Ultimate Edition) and it thinks I am running the game in “Compatibility Mode”.  When I go to play the game, it cycles back to the launcher.  How do I fix this?
From a post on the Steam user forums (WARNING- requires Registry editing):
*Back up the Windows registry.
*Click the “Start” button, select “Run” and type regedit.  (For Win 7 users, you can click “Start” and type regedit into the Start Menu search bar).
*Go to key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\AppCompatFlags\\Layers
*Look for an entry with your directory path to steam.exe (this depends on where you installed the Steam desktop client)
* Delete that entry
*If you don’t find it there try HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\AppCompatFlags\\Layers
*Exit the Registry Editor
