Where's the film grain in the demo? It was a really nice addition in ME1 and 2 and I'd hate to see you guys get rid of it for no apparent reason...

I don't understand why anyone would want film grain. I absolutely hate that effect. Though the option will probably be there.

Hope it's in the full game.

I guess that's what I saw missing yesterday when I played the game. I didn't understand it at the time but everyone and everything looked "hard" and unnatural. If the fine grain acts as a smoothing agent then I'm all for it. I enjoyed the game play but found the voices and the hard look disconcerting. Because of these two items I have to sayI was disappointed with the demo and can only hope the one-hundred bucks I dropped for the pre-order (game and book) will be worth it.

I always play Me1 and ME2 with film grain - sad to see it gone.

Pretty sure it's gone, game has gone gold and there is no reason for them to remove it from the demo.
I liked Film Grain, so this sucks.

Film grain was great. Not sure why its gone? Why remove features noone complained about. Doesnt make sense.

Film grain adds realism. And improves picture quality. How the hell does it improve quality if it adds noise you say? Thats biology. See, adding noise to the picture offloads decoding work into our brain. Anything humans see is a postprocessed brain picture. The less info you get, the more gaps our brain will fill by itself, and since its a far, far superior rendering device than any PC in the world, as long as you get enough info to reconstruct an object, you get photorealistic graphics at no cost.Jonttu1 wrote...

I have no issue with it being available -hurrah choice! etc- but it almost stopped me from getting into the Mass Effect series. I couldn't play Mass Effect 1 for more than about ten minutes without getting REALLY sick and having to turn the game off. In one instance, it did actually make me physically ill. I couldn't figure out why - I have no troubles with motion sickness, or epilepsy, or any of those other medical issues that they blab on about in the front of the manual.
Eventually I turned film grain off, and from there on everything was wine and roses. Still don't understand why, but hey ho! As long as I can turn off, I hope you guys who want it get the option.

I almost never played the Mass Effect games because when I tried them I couldn't believe how BAD they looked. It was only after I realized that you could actually turn OFF the grain, that the games became playable.
I don't care if they keep it as an option, as more options are always better, but I am sure it probably cost them some players by having it active by default.

Always thought the film grain looked ugly and was a cheap way to hide the lack of AA.

Film grain makes it better. Besides both previous games had it, it's like a franchise feature. I like(d) it, it gave some atmosphere, and i believe film grain hide those unpleasant little graphic misadvantages from the eye.

Having no noise in an image is obviously the best way to analyse it as you would be looking at raw, discrete data. However it's not necessarily the best aesthetically, depending upon the situation. I don't think the grain is so much to hide the lack of AA, but somewhat obfuscate the flat or low resolution nature of some of the textures, which I felt it did a reasonable job of in ME1, as well as add a bit of atmosphere.
In the end, it is personal preference in the Mass Effect games. Some people like it, some people find it ugly. But noise can, and does obfuscate quantisation phenomenon on digital scales which while disadvantageous scientifically, can actually be more pleasant to look at/listen.

Just leave it turned off by default...leave the option there for the many thousands of fans who have grown accustomed to it over the past 5 years of playing mass effect.

If it's about anti-aliasing then I'm sure there's an option in the demo for that in the graphics menu. Although when I turned everything on I still had loads of jaggies so maybe it's there but doesn't work!?
( To be honest, I could never really see much difference between film grain on or off in ME 2, but then my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be!

Can we get film grain back please? What is it with these stupid decisions Bioware? Offer the damn OPTION like you guys did with Mass Effect 2 and keep everyone happy... is it that hard?

eh? the purpose of film grain and anti aliasing, are totaly unrelated.
The AA refine the shape of border's objects to reduce the aliasing effect, the film grain is a non-omogenouse grey noise helping to bring more realisme to the surface of objects exposed to the light by breaking the perfect exposition and intensity.
By defaut 3D lightning have the same intensity wich is totaly unrealistic, perfect surface, perfect light intensity, those are the worst ennemy of CG because they don't exist in our real world. In reality, no surface 100% clean, and light is never constant; radiosity, reflection, occlusion, the multiple bounce of ray of light are not simulated in real time 3D yet (too much ressources and rendering time).
Our blue sky it-selft is the proof that our world never receive perfect lighting; the atmosphere is the first thing to disrupt the rays of light before reaching us, separating some color spectrum, the blue being the shortest color wave, that explain why the sky appear blue.
And by the way, i hope the film grain filter option will be back. It's is may be a cheap trick, but i would take it anyday to make the 3D look less perfect and less clean.

Hope to see it back too. Love the effect. In fact, I was sad when they reduced the effect going from 1 to 2.

I hope to see it back too; it did a good job of hiding the cg imperfections, making the whole experience look a little better for me.

Loved the grain effect, would be great to have it back!
I don't see why they'd suddenly take it out anyway, if it bothers people it could just be off by default or something

Mass Effect without grain isn't Mass Effect. It's part and parcel of the series aesthetics. Put it back, Bioware!
