Why random gear packs terrify me

EA may SELL these packages on the side.
They've done it before in Need for Speed World. Nearly identical to the packages you see in the demo, they contain 3 random one-time use powerups and 2 car parts upgrades (they are unlockable by playing the game normally with a similar credit system abiet with a significant time investment and dirt poor drop rates.) This caused a "Pay 2 Win" situation and caused incredible community backlash.
Obviously ME3 multiplayer isn't comperetive so the "fairness" argument isn't big. However, EA loves their Free-2-Play tactics. Create a grind that perpetually peeves gamers and then introduce a way to circumvent that grind by paying cash.
Bioware, for the love of all that is Mass Effect, tell me that this is not the case. I want to be able to sleep soundly knowing that you didn't give into one of EA's dastardly profit-gouging schemes.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Forcing players to grind for hours without getting the reward they need so that they will lay down cash out of frustration.Indoctrinated Spectre wrote...

An yeh, FIFA equally has this system with it's 'Ultimate Team', in fact I think Ultimate Team came first.

There wouldn't be a profit. I mean here we are in the demo, playing against Cerberus with a bunch of low level new players and (personally) our teams have won the majority of my games. Seriously. If they offered bonus equipment, there just wouldnt be a profit, because all the equipment for the fans is already in the game and thats all you need to win the match.

My concern is not that it puts non-paying players at a disadvantage.DayusMakhina wrote...
I don't see them managing to pull it off with ME, an even if they do what does it actually matter? You'd in no way have to do it yourself and your hardly at a disadvantage to others if they do and you don't considering it's cooperative.

I have major issues with designing a game mechanic for the sole purpose of getting you to fork over cash.

Well, that's just looking at it in a negative light. The whole random pack thing encourages people to continue playing and equally try new classes/races than they usually would. If they equally added the ability to purchase these packs on the side it would still be exactly that, something on the side.TruSkill wrote...

I played for a whole day, bought tons of recruit and veteran packs, and did not get a single new race or class. Not. A. Single. One.
If its to encourage me to try new things bioware is doing a horrible job of it.

Then again, hopefully the non-competitive nature of ME3 multiplayer will mean that it wouldn't work.

I really hope it dosen't come to this, but It might explain why Bioware are trying to force such an unpopular system (I mean just one look at the forums would tell you most people don't like it)

I could have sworn the devs talking about ways to unlock stuff in multiplayer using singleplayer, but that was some time ago.

I swear one developer said something along the lines of "When you recruit the Turians to your cause they become avaliable in multiplayer" and it made sense. I don't think it was too long ago either. But now there are these random randomized bags?
It's a bit suspicious actually, and I have to wonder if there was a bit of executive meddling going here from EA. Makes me slightly concerned about this buyable packs theory

This is all speculation, but the inclusion of these random equipment packages just reeks of EA. After seeing the Recruitment Facebook app that gives you these packages in the real release version, I instantly suspected what was could be happening.

I think I remember a dev saying that they will directly sell the things you want (and not random packs). If you want the Widow and can't get it in random unlocks, just buy it off the shelf and pay a little bit of real money.
But the system you described is probably more lucrative for them, so I don't know.
