Bioware forces us to melee instead of sniper?

My best moments in ME2 was with a widow infiltrator, a widow soldier, a caster adept, a caster sentinel. Yes I enjoyed the vanguard and was a bit sad he had only shotgun and riflebut for melee, but now it seems every class has to do some kind of close combat.

Bioware said long ago that they want to make melee more viable. But I did not expect the impression the demo leaves with me. Being a sniper was not permitted at all, and when you played an infiltrator or soldier, the ridiculous long cooldown prevented any effective use of sniper tactics (which is a kind of burst damage).

The most effective tactics in the demo seems to do crowd control, flank and go melee on a thus isolated selected enemy. It is nice to be able to do this, but this is not my favourite play style. This is what the vanguard did in ME2.

The closest I came to sniper style in the demo, was using the soldier with AR, a headshot-maxed ammo power and the pistol; even then, the long cooldown quenched any possible flow this playstyle should have.

I seriously hope that the game also includes enough options to go good old fashioned sniper mode.

In the demo it isn't caster friendly. There's a new weight system in place, the more weight you have form guns the longer the cooldowns. So a. they don't give you a sniper. B. they have a forced weapon load out more in line with a full soldier class. I know for a fact you can take only one gun and reduce the cool downs by an insane amount.

Edit
In the full game I can't beleive I would ever say this, but I think it's going to be... balanced. DUN DUN DUnnnnnnnn. /dramatic

They may have finally gotten it right. As an INfiltrator I expect you wont need more than your sniper and a backup weapon which will reduce the cooldown of your powers by at least 50-60% if not more.

I like your summary of me3 tactics - thats exactly the way I think the demo at least is designed to be played. There must be a reason why we weren't given a sniper rifle in the demo - possibly because bioware new the enclosed spaces wouldn't be suited for its use (or maybe there just wasn't enough file space for it). Having said that I'm sure there will be larger areas in the rest of the game that will suit the sniper perfectly.

Isn't it said you can make your own loadout? I won't go out with too many weapons: Pistol + Sniper is perfect for an infiltrator. I don't need Assault Rifles and Shotguns, never used them in ME1 or ME2. SMGs are quite useful too, would take one instead of the Pistol.

Also I wonder if we can pick our squadmates quite freely: what if I like to use Soldier class as tank and a Biotic for support? My fave squad was Ashley & Kaidan or Ashley & Wrex in ME1 - they worked perfectly with my Infiltrator. In the Demo I had to do the job with Liara and Garrus. While Liara was quite helpful, Garrus as a second Infiltrator isn't the best choice for a close combat level.
