Teh, what Melo is saying there and you seem to have some difficulties parsing it, is that the market has a place for rpgs, since even the most mainstream games have incorporated aspects of rpg games.

^ THIS
right he is saying that people play games that are not considered RPGs, but actually have alot of RPG elements in them, thus they would play a real RPG, or something that was actually marketed as a RPG to an extent.
also the TPS asspect of the game has been marketed the most because showing bits of the story in trailers could lead to more spoliers, and they do want to show that the game is fun to play and not just a conversation sim

Don't you find it rather telling that no game has matched the literary quality of Planescape: Torment yet? And that quality was rather lacking compared to what you'd find in actual literature. We have another example in Baldur's Gate. Remember the amount of races, spells, items, dungeons and classes? Way more than what you'd see in any modern RPG. Nowadays we're blessed if we get more than human. It has nothing to do with nostalgia. In fact, I still play these games on a daily basis as there is no real modern counterpart.EJ107 wrote...
You see, people say that, but aside from the whole DLC thing (which I agree is annoying) I honestly don't remember the games from my childhood being that much better when it came to quality. Sure, they're rose-tinted from nostalgia, but I also remember them being quite buggy and having shoddy writing at times.

Because my good friend Legion... there will be a time when views clash and there is always is..
its not the clash that is the issue... merely how that clash is resolved.

OP is wrong. BioWare are making better interactive cinematic emotionally engaging narratives than ever. If you can't handle the new and innovative features and design, then I suggest that your expectations are misaligned.

I dont know if what you call the state of gaming progession . I would say its devolving . To much hype , way to expensive to the point where these multi million dollar game company like EA is afraid to take a risk on innovation and has to resort to selling fans 2 dollar DLC. At this point Bioware should feel challenged to show the fans they can still make a great RPG with Mass Effect and it being the last game in the series, Bioware/EA should have went all out with quality ,story, graphics/art and game machanics/game play. The demo certainly doesnt feel like they went ALL OUT and make the absolute best game they can conjure. Instead the demo feels medicore, just like the state of gaming in this current generation.
What the hell do you mean "can still make good RPGs"? Bioware releases ONE failure which is a matter of opinion in the first place, and all of a sudden they can't make good RPGs anymore?
I don't accept this crap people peddle about ME2 being more a shooter then an RPG. A shooter by its modern definition wouldn't feature dialog wheels AT ALL, let alone collecting resources and exploring.

A few things here. ME was never intended to be a true RPG. I have said many times on this forum that I believe they had to revert to their old formula because they couldn't figure out combat so they incorporated more RPG elements than originally intended. ME2 and ME3 are truer to the vision Bioware set out for the series. Secondly, games cost far too much to make now and studios don't like to take risks so they dumb down games and streamline them to appeal to a broader audience so the revenue stream is wider. I do not believe gamers want dumbed down games but for some reason, that is what the industry thinks we want. It's kind of odd. in 2012, life is more complex then it has ever been and yet, game studios think gamers want "simple". I just don't get it.

What about the last sentence, teh? he's saying the right thing: most gamers out there are already playing games with rpg aspects, so there is a lot of market opportunity which should be explored, read "expand". The last sentence is not referring to cod-like playing at all...
Fallout is an RPG, it doesn't have RPG elements.
