So, I'm a long-time Mass Effect player, and one thing that always bothered me more than anything else in the game was how my squad would constantly and willingly commit suicide. Even when I would manually tell them to stay put, they would die because they didn't quite get against the cover like I told them, didn't know to get back in cover after a knock-back, or they would completely ignore my command altogether because they would "reset" after a baddie died.
I've been reading up on the demo on these forums, and from what I've read, it has a lot of issues. The enemy A.I. is reportedly a lot better, however the squad A.I. was barely mentioned. So I'd like to know how well the squadmates are doing on the higher difficulties. Will I STILL need to babysit them every 10 seconds?
How is The Squad A.I. On Higher Difficulties?

On insanity I've found the squad dont really need to be micromanaged anymore. They seem to stay alive without me having to position them out of harms way. All in all much better.

I had no problems with the squard AI. The fact they use cover and rolling etc alot more now helps.

Considering they can play the game for you on "Normal" I would say pretty good.

On hardcore Liara dies pretty much every pack as for Garrus, well during the fight against the Atlas when the mech got close to his cover positio rather than run away to a different cover Garus actually rose up from cover and tried to melee the Atlas. Now that was a pathetic death

I've done 2 hardcore playthroughs and they seem much better than me2. Garrus died twice on my second go but that was more my fault for hogging the only cover he could use to get away from the atlas (and then accidently rezzing him without moving the altas away).

They seem a lot smarter about surviving, and a lot more useful as back-up fire. They were real slow in the demo though in getting to my location. I would be spamming C and they would still be like 2 rooms behind me.

I've been playing Insanity from the get-go and the squad AI's been really good to me so far. I find they are much more responsive and generally faster at doing things this time around. I haven't had trouble with them moping or wandering, but I've always been a keen micromanager of my squad.
I managed to outflank Cerberus during the entirety of the Atlas fight, to the point that the Atlas AI literally stood spinning in place, so the potential is there for some serious moves!

I usually have quite good luck on Insanity with the squad AI when left to their own devices.
However when I try to micromange my squad position I run into problems. Many times I tell the squad to move to a specific spot and they simply refuse to acknowledge the order. This was esp. bad during the "turret" battle.
FYI: In that fight I would sometimes have a squadmate go down literally before I could issue the order "not to charge the turrets of doom".

^Yeah, if squaddies sense that they are in immediate danger, they will belay orders until the danger is past. That doesn't stop them from putting themselves in danger though.

That's good to hear. I was a little worried about having Wrex commit suicide like Miranda does in ME2...

I played through hardcore twice, once as a Vanguard and the other as an Adept. Liarra only died twice and both times were during the Atlas fight. What class were you using? Overall I was pleased with the squad AI. On a side note, Hardcore was much easier than I expected.

Mostly pretty good. One great moment on Insanity where both me and Liara rolled into the same grenade from opposite directions , but mates tend to last much longer now.

I thought the AI was worse than ME2 personally. Maybe I was just hitting glitches but my guys seemed to frequently just stop fighting altogether and stay off on one side crouched for extended periods.
Commanding them seemed to work pretty well, though, apart from some go here issues, but nothing more than the previous titles experienced.
