So I decided to take a look at the intro to the GREATEST RPG of all time, Knights of the Old Republic. Despite the later awesomeness of the game, the intro/tutorial section leaves a lot to be desired, and the parallels between KOTOR's intro and ME3's intro abound.
For example, let's look at some of the many criticisms of ME3's intro, and then see how the same things show up in the GREATEST RPG of all time.
(1) ME3's intro is too abrupt!!!! We get only a few lines of dialogue before we're dumped straight into the action.
KOTOR's intro is also pretty darn abrupt. You are given no info about your character, and instead simply wake up in the middle of a battle. After a few ham-fisted lines of expository dialogue from your bunkmate, Trask Ulgo, you start shooting things with blasters.
(2) The dialogue is silly! That line: "it's not about strategy and tactics, it's about survival" is dummmbbbb!
An actual line of dialogue from KOTOR's intro:
"I'm Trask Ulgo, ensign with the Republic Fleet. I'm your bunk mate here on the Endar Spire. We work opposite shifts; I guess that's why you haven't seen me before."
So we share the SAME ROOM but have never seen each other before. Sure that makes sense. Oh wait it totally doesn't.
(3) There are only two dialogue choices in the ME3 demo. And no matter what we choose we're railroaded into certain decisions anyway!
Throughout KOTOR's intro, there are often only two dialogue choices, and you are forced to do certain things you don't want to do. For example, if you tell Trask that you don't intend to help defend Bastilla Shan, and instead just want to run to the escape pods, he calls you an idiot and says that you're going to go help her anyway.
(4) Logic fails abound - e.g. The Reapers blow up a transport ship, but not the Normandy, even though the Normandy is right there!!!
In KOTOR's intro, your ship is crashing around you, yet Trask still takes the time to bore you with long explanations about game mechanics and some basic plot info.
So yeah, if you nitpick anything do death you will find many hidden gems of terribleness. KOTOR has them, and I'm guessing that most of the other intros to Bioware games have them too. And despite having a pretty ham-fisted tutorial section, KOTOR went on to be an amazing game. So I dunno, maybe chillax a little bit people?
