Past level 10 or so Bronze becomes fairly easly with a good team, then its onto silver and then gold if you're feeling ambitious.
I havent leveled anything up past 11 yet because I like trying all the new ones out, just unlocked Drell vanguard!

Best tip on Firebase ghost is to move[AS A TEAM] around the outskirts of the map[within the buildings] to have cover and ammo crates. Remember, your greatest advantage over the atlas'sssssss is their lack of speed.

So yes for your shooter newbie its way too hard and should have a training mode at least to help people get into the fast paced world of online shooters. In the end if there is no mechanism to help newbies get into online mode, you'll have substantially less people playing online.

Tell me about it, being atwave ten and you think "hey this is going great, we'll beat it this time" only to have something go horribly wrong and everyone wipes. Usually the VIP-hunt missions are the ones that get me. I get stressed by timers quite easily.
Played one silver by accident recently (got an invite wich placed me smack dab in the middle of it all) with a good leveled group, was fun but my shields were down constantly, still great teamwork was had even if we wiped at wave 7 or 8..

I don't exactly agree but from the ridiculous numbers people have been experiencing I'd say that a number cap on them would probably be welcome.
They are pretty op with both barriers, ability to dodge powers, invisibility and near insta-kills but still manageable in small numbers.

Anyway, I did my first Gold run tonight. We were doing relatively well until we got wiped during wave 10.
I think I like Silver better, it's less ridiculous IMO.
Also, the best thing to have against a Gold Phantom: an Asari Adept with Stasis.

asari adept..? at the moment i am loving her. throw level 6 is insane with a quick cool down time. Even with a widow equiped. The cool down time is so fast, I don;t even have time to reload the widow before i spam throw again.
just saw the sentinal also has throw. considering a change but would have to level up
