ME1 was never as optimized or fluid as ME2, but the discrepency on my laptop is huge.  I can't even get the game to run smoothly at 16:9 resolution, I had to turn it all the way down to 800 x 600 to prevent biotics or random texture loading from killing the framerate.  I know ME1 has plenty of tweaking options, but which ones can help with a notable performance improvement?  It could take hours experimenting with the visual-improving tweaks in the other thread, so I'm not too keen on searching through that.

i5 @ 2.40 GHz, GT540M 1GB, 6GB memory.  Runs ME2 fine, dislikes ME1.
