As you play the Mass Effect games you notice that some corporations / organisations have huge power - political and economical. One example is Cerberus. So I have been thinking. How come the world is still ruled by politicans and governments and not huge corporations? I mean, with the galaxy wide open for trade and mining, lots of diffrent corporations must have netted huge incomes over the years. I just have a hard time believing that these corps still acts under the same principle of law and order as we do. I mean, how does the alliance keep up? Does every colony pay spacetaxes to the alliance? Can a corp claim a planet and avoid taxes that way, or does all newly discoverd planets fall under gorvenment restrictions?

When you consider how openly Cerberus acts, taking the law in thier own hands and so on, it just makes it hard to believe that the alliance or the citadel council have any say in what happens in the universe what so ever. It just seems to be a big ruse of some sort.

What do you all think? Any ideas on how the universe in Mass Effect works when it comes to trade, corporations, law & order and real governent power?

Many places are run by corporations, though, Illium and Noveria are the two most prominent examples. And many corporations claim planets for their own use.

I think what you're describing is basically the Terminus Systems. Citadel space is run by the Council; Terminus seems to be largely run by private corporate armies.

We don't really know how shady some of the corporations are.

AFAWK, the Elkoss Combine could donate to charity every other day, and Eldfell-Ashland could be having people assassinated on tuesdays.

Eldfell-Ashland reminds me of Weyland-Yutani heh.

I expect it's fiance that's the issue. It's much easier to operate as a corporation under the affilation of the Turians, Systems Alliance, Citadel or whatever.

Yes they have enough money to fund their own colonies (which, would bring them into contact and possible jurisdication of governments anyway) and research worlds but I doubt they have the money to do multiples of these and fund a standing army plus ships capable of defending against an organised raid from pirates or non-citadel species.

So it's probably a mutual beneficial relationship to remain within Government circles for protection and funding.

Eldfell-Ashland needs to cut their losses and move to safer space. I swear in like four ME2 N7 missions (and Zaeed's loyalty) we're saving their asses from some sort of crisis.

Yeah, it's the reason I created this thread. I think I read somewhere that Wallmart has more money to move around than my country and they are just doing business here on earth. Think of the expansion capabilities when the whole galaxy is open for you to do trade.

It just makes me wonder why some corps haven't moved out from the lobbying to say; complete government take over. Or establish new ones with thier own laws.

And yes, as someone said in this thread, terminus system is like that. But it still makes me wonder how the alliance, and the citadel still manage to keep up, in thier own territory.

Instead of Cerberus acting as a shadow organisation, they could just establish themself outside alliance space, or maybe even within and create thier own form of government with the believes they got. Considering how much money they got, and they do seem to have alot of manpower as well

They would avoid alot of hazzle and backroom politics. But at the same time, the alliance, or the citadel dosen't seem to give much notice anyway. It seems Cerberus can move around pretty freely, even if the organisation is labeled as terrorists. This makes be believe the alliance, nor the citadel has the capacity or the will to take down a huge organisations as this.

For me this opens up a discussion if citadel space, and government really has anything to say when corps and orgranisations can grow to this size and basicilly do whatever they please.
