Over the course of playing, I've bought several item packs that contain a weapon I already have. The card will say something like "Upgrade +1" if I get say the Mantis.

The Mantis is now at level 7 ("M-92 Mantis VII") but I haven't noticed any improvements to the weapon. The stats have not changed., at least via the stat bars. The only improvements seem to come from the weapon modifications themselves.

Mind giving a quick rundown on how the weapons actually upgrade in the full-game? In ME1, each tier of a weapon had a different look, i.e. color, model, etc. Is that how it will be in the final game? Or will they receive stat increases?

It increases stats. For an example, I just unlocked M98 Widow II. It gave me additional thermal clips, which was really nice considering how few of those I originally was carrying around. Other weapons most likely get small boosts to damage, accuracy etc.

They usually become a little lighter and have more spare thermal clips with them. I'm pretty sure they do get a stat boost but the new stats replace the old ones so it doesn't look like it's improved.
