Mentioned many times in many posts I know but I really wanted to flag to Bioware that these removed features (both present in the first two games) are key to immersion and enjoying the world and not just because people dont like change!.

Shepard/I wouldnt run around with his gun out and I cant enjoy the amazing scenery without a free camera. Why would I point my gun when there is nothing to point it at!!!! Holster really is important to immersion and the world.

And then there is film grain.... its just not the mass effect universe without it!

My 2 cents

Edit: changed the title to better articulate my point. It's the fact that you loose the free camera and minimised HUD that I dont like and that for me is quite a big turn off.

Actually in a combat zone a professional soldier would normally only sling his weapon when crossing an obstacle.

Honestly I stopped using the film grain after ME1 because I could never even see it in ME2.

It doesn't really fit the feel of ME2 or ME3 anyway.

Film Grain just looks terrible in ME1 and I never even knew it was in place in ME2. Not being in at all is a good thing.

While I'm no fan of the film grain effect, I have to wonder why you would say that removing a harmless option already in place is a good thing.

There's technical issues that affect holstering weapons. Explained by Brenon Holmes in THIS thread.

Brenon Holmes wrote...

In combat areas, you have your gun out... in more hub-like areas you don't.

It's unfortunate, but sadly it was needed to claw back a significant chunk of memory. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/uncertain.png[/smilie]

Brenon,
could you bring more details into that? It's a RAM memory issue or
disc-space file size issue? It's a problem exclusive to the demo or the
full game too?

It's a runtime memory cost, not a disk
space issue. You need those anims for the non-combat areas... so
they're going to be on disk regardless.

In order to support
exploration in the combat areas, you'd need to have all the anims loaded
in memory... so that would be things like the 8-way walks, runs,
incline anims, idles, idle twitches, male/female variant overrides, eye
noise... etc.

All in all (iirc) it came out to around 2-4MB,
which is relatively significant. Also, as you've guessed, yes - I'm
referring to the main game (as well as the demo).

As an infantry Marine, who has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan I will say we never ever ever sling our weapons in a combat zone, unless absolutely necessary. Perhaps an obstacle, but it is immediately back out.
If on base, yeah I'll sling it. So where is the problem? His spring is similar to some sprints Ive seen, done, with a loaded rifle.
It actually makes more sense for him to have it out at all times when there is a potential threat.

I prefer sharper graphics myself, so film grain is always quick to go with me...I thought the Demo looked too gritty personally, am hoping that's cleared up.

As for hlostering, yep, I wouldn't mind being able to holster myself, though this just being a Demo, we don't really know how 'holstering', etc...mechanics will work in the actual game.

Well you don't have a camera right over your shoulder either in reality... the camera view is extremely annoying when exploring. I use to holster everytime I could in ME1 and 2 for that reason alone.

I don't really see it as a big issue...for me the biggest issues with the demo were the graphics and the animations

I'm preeeeeetty sure you were not trained to push buttons with the barrel of your gun, either.

omg 2-4MB of memory is significant? Itsnt it great to live in an age where people have 16000MB ram installed.

I fully take your point but this isnt real life its a computer game with a fictional world we are there to enjoy (and cant ACTUALLY get shot!) but also while you might have your weapon out you probably dont keep it pointing directly 90 degrees forward at all times even when listening to a traders log or opending a safe!!

The memory issue has been explained I know but I just dont think the 2-4 mb is a good excuse. But how about working on a work around rather than just removing a feature??

for example have the gun dip and let the camera rotate freely when not moving/being attacked. Thats what 1 extra animation but solves the issue.

Its sacrificing quality of a product for a couple of 0.0005 fps! Not a good trade off (especially for PC players where the memory is a non issue!)

Guys Shepard DOES lower his weapon when using his omni tool to breach doors or whatever.

Apoc, you're just not going to get this feature, it had to be taken out to improve performance. They're not going to patch in new animations now.

ha new, have you played mass effect 2?! they have taken them out!!

I know they wont add things back in though, they showed their lack of regard for their audience with the simple changes people craved for Mass 2 (Helmets im talking to you), but that doesnt mean we should just accept it.

If you dont voice issues thats how to 100% gaurentee they wont be fixed!

Immersion was broken with the addition of the mission success screen in ME2.
That and ripping out the exploration. So much for the mysteries of the galaxy.

Being able to holster my weapon was a big thing to me in ME1, 2. This being gone in ME3, honestly it just made the game seem more like every other game, kind of like a FPS instead of a RPG. Two of my friends have already canceled their pre-orders in part because of this. BioWare can put it back in if they really wanted to, it's called patching the game release day. While I know a lot of the reviews have been positive, and I like it overall, in the end, I think that there are a lot of unhappy people as well. Feels like the last time out they alienated a good portion of their loyal fans.

For those arguing that in REAL life soldiers would not holster their weapon, yeah well, in real life they dont have shields, or biotics, or super cool armor to protect them. This is not real life, in an RPG we get to be who we want to be, we dont have to follow logic. Unless it is forced upon us with the removal of a feature.

BTW my original review was way more positive until I knew that the holster thing was removed, not just absent from the demo. These things can be a deal breaker.

I can see you being disappointed with the lack of film grain, or even holster IF you are a PC gamer. But "immersion lost"? really?

That's a ridiculously weak argument.

You can't be possibly serious. That's just retarded.

It's not like we are going to walk through the Citadel up to the Council ponting guns at them. When something that involves possible combat happens, a mini-cutscene appears and the holstered gun walking animations are dumped from memory in favor of the drawn-out-guns animations.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll stop reading these kinds of threads. So much stupid makes my head hurt.

Uhhhhh..... no, its isn't key to immersion. It may be a person's *preference*, it may be something *they personally* wish to see, it may be something *they personally* need for immersion.... but its not something thats universally needed, at all.

Holster waepon ability is a must. Bioware should fix this important
issue does not matter if only for the PC version only. Many times PC
versions of a lot of games have features that consoles don't. Why this
should be the exception?

Maybe not everyone uses the holster
weapon but I would say that the great majority do. There is a lot of
unhappy people about this, me included.

Bioware please do something about it.
