Possible tiny spoiler below.

Quick question about the % complete stat.  Is this tracking how much of the total game you've seen including origins and alternate plot decisions, or is it just how far you are away from beating the game?  I have a quest now called "The Final Battle" and I am only 50 hours in with 36% complete, I pray to Jesus I am not nearing the end of the game :(

spoiler below:

yes you are. It includes all origin starters when calculating that it seems. I even got the achievement for 75% of all side quests done and was nothing near 100%

It's tracking more than just the total game you've seen. According to my observation you will have to experience every origin story and complete quests with each possible conclusion in order to potentially reach 100%.

My advice is don't chase 100% you'll burn out.

I heard that it was the amount of achievements you've gathered.

Well that's a bit disappointing. I was looking forward to a 100+ hour adventure, but I have BG2 for that I suppose. Guess I am going to crank the difficulty from Hard to Nightmare on my next playthrough. I never felt that the combat increased in difficulty as I progressed.

Maybe I'm not understanding, but you're hoping for a 100+ hour game, when 50 hours in you have 36% complete.

Given that you have 64% left and it took 50 hours to get where you are another play through could be in order (or at least playing through the orgins) you could well have 100+ hours of gameplay.

Anyway.  Yeah mine is saying 60% complete after I hit the final battle on my first playthough, I had previously done 4 out of 6 of the orgins though, and I know I skipped a good number of the various Board/Collective/etc. quests.  So doing another playthrough as a different character with different ideology.

I will definitely play for 100+ hours, I just wish the adventure itself lasted a longer time. I kinda felt like once I reached the climax of the army-building quests, it was the end of chapter 1 rather than the turning point of the entire game. I was probably expecting too much though. The game's definitely fun and worth the $65 + 7 I paid for it.

I found that disappointing too. I hoped for a longer game, i was guiding after my % and 100 hours pass barrier. Played approximately 50 hours and 46 % complete with the mention that I did almost every quest i encountered. Well it was worth it, even with 50 hours, it is a very nice game. I am expecting expansions however :)

I got 100% achievements for around 140 total played time over 3 runs. I admit i used a respecc mod to get the mage specialization achievements. Nothing that doesnt pay me back for my time deserves it

I'm at the final battle now, I have played 84 hours and it's saying the game's 84% complete so I guess that's quite good then. To the OP: you must have missed a lot of side quests then?

I seriously doubt your statement to be true. My first run ended with slightly less than 50% being complete

After my first, 110 hour, playthrough I was just shy of 50% completed. Finished my second playthrough yesterday where I also did some quests I missed the first time. Took 88 hours, although I speeded through the entire final battles on easy mode. I've also played through 2 other origin stories. Now I have 67% completed. I've done pretty much all sidequests I've come across, but I know of one or two I haven't done.

My first play through i was at 63%, I was surprised, because i hardly did any sub quest.

I dont know what Im doing wrong compared to you guys but I've completed the game a couple days ago and it took me 112 hours and it says i explored 95% of the land and completed 51% of story and I also got the 75% of sidequests achievement. It feels like it took me forever. I did also complete Wardens Keep but I know for sure I didnt complete hardly any of my companions quests. But it definitely took me a long time but I also searched every square inch of the game.

the % complete refers ONLY to percentage of possible achievements you have earned. If you start a 2nd game, you will start out with the 50% completed. There are 84 possible achievements, plus 3 for DLC so far. Also, some achievements are only worth 10 points, some up to 30 points. Check your player profile page in the game (not online) shows better detail on what achievements you have and % numbers

i'm not sure about this but i think it represents the trophies percentage. If you download the extras witch hunt and others it makes the adjustments accordingly. I'm at 98% for in game stat and 98% for trophies just two achievements from the golems of amgarrak to go.

Actually, I wonder how you can get to the Final Battle after just 50 hours. My only explanation would be that you left a lot of the sidequests unfinished. (and/or skipped over dialogue, cutscenes etc.) If you "savour" the game properly, explore everything, do all sidequests, talk to everybody, it takes longer, IMO. My first playthrough alone was 110 hours, including Stone Prisoner and Warden's Keep. (and reaching The Final Battle at about 103 hours...) Subsequent playthroughs took about as long.

That seems very excessive to complete everything. My first playthrough i finished the game with about 88% and it took me 38 hours. With that understanding my second playthrough i completed everything in the game in 36 hours. I'm not judging your gaming ability it's a fantastic game i've played around 180 hours now chasing achievements. I may have just approached the game differently as you would know there is a difference in completing the game and obtaining achievements.

I have been wondering about this as well, as the stat says that my complete is 50% when I am about to finish Landsmeet. I thought I missed something big toward the beginning. I tried to do every possible quest there is (except I didn't check the walkthrough so I may miss a few small quests). I suppose 50% also counts toward all the DLC I didn't buy.

I don't count how long I finish a game, because I spend too much time idling (when reading web and research spec, I have respec mod). So far Steam clocks 300+ hours for my DA:O and I have completed one game, with 2 others in progress.

If it's taken you 50+ hours to get to the final battle of Dragon age:Origins, you're doing it wrong. 22hrs tops.

or you could be NOT skipping all conversations.

btw, I love how you're attempting to school people on how they should play on a topic that is over 2 years old.

lol... I'll never get through with even 50... I just love roving about, taking holiday screenshot snaps, exploring options... Not much of an incentive to rush to the end.

As to the OP's quandry, I do believe it's those achievements and their point basis that make the count. The way that someone who does few sidequests can get up in % quickly is by saving the game before the various "achievement" (a term used rather liberally given that, say, trapping the werewolves in wolf form and murdering the elves counts as an "achievement") moments and then choosing all the various ways before proceeding on. It's the main campaign plus skill/ talent stuff that gives the points, not sidequests or areas...
