Because you can.
Its not something I can do, its something I must do. That was the main reason for asking my question. Why require us to do so if no one else can even see our name?

Why can't we just choose which gender we want to play as instead of "unlocking" them?!

Ex: Steve Smith (character name)

If you are utterly bereft of imagination, you can simply accept their default name and have multiple people named CHARACTER NAME.

It's because multiplayer characters will eventually be imported into ME3's single player as war assets, and they need a name instead of being "HUMAN INFILTRATOR #483".
This never actually occured to me. Looks like I'll need to start brainstorming names for my MP characters before march.

Seriously, that's great. I name my characters just for fun, but it's great to hear they'll be mentioned in my main mission.
I never thought about that, I think I'll have to do that when the main game comes along.Legion64 wrote...
I name my humans with names similar to
something like Delta Force (Nightmare, Fog, Ghost, Pharaoh, etc.) Other
species get their traditional names.

For example, your canon can be named Steve, secondary can be Dave.

I'm all for this, I just wish the Character name displayed in-game, instead of my GT.

I think that was the OP's point all along, it was just missed. Why name them if the name is not used in the actual gameplay, only on your Character Screen? People see them all as your gamertag anyways.

I'm adding these characters to my head canon. I'm glad bioware did it.
More or less this.
It'd be great though if the characters we promoted were added to the campaign asset's update thing, if nothing else saying 'UPDATE: [character] was promoted after meritorious service in various engagements to the rank of N7' or something like that. That way I can remember who I have and don't have. =/

that's about as much time I put into them since they don't mean much outside of that menu haha

It's a bit too bad because I generally enjoy coming up with names. On the other hand, I now feel free to come up with the full gamut of silly names. I have Krogan named Oral-B because his armor is toothpaste colored. I named my human adept Taffy and my current asari adept is Barbarella. Since no one sees the names but me, I don't have to ever explain them.
