What exactly is the point of requiring us to name our character? Am I missing some option where I can actually see the names of other players' characters, or is it just an arbitrary requirement?

Because you can.

Its not something I can do, its something I must do. That was the main reason for asking my question. Why require us to do so if no one else can even see our name?

Whats the point in having a Highlight for your armor color?
Why can't we just choose which gender we want to play as instead of "unlocking" them?!

It gives that RPG feeling from single player and puts it in multiplayer. Like you're creating your own army of super soldiers. It's just something for your imagination. I kind of like it. Doesn't make the multiplayer just a normal shooter. It even has a little RPG. Anyway, I named my awesome Drell Lhayne. Totally awesome.

Yeah, I wondered about this, too. It kinda seems to defeat the purpose.

Meh, I just use my gamertag then add a number on the end of it.

It's because multiplayer characters will eventually be imported into ME3's single player as war assets, and they need a name instead of being "HUMAN INFILTRATOR #483".

I like it. I give each of my characters little call-signs like Whisper, Wolfman and Paladin instead of actual names.

I'm adding these characters to my head canon. I'm glad bioware did it.

It'd be really cool to have our character's names displayed in some way.

Ex:  Steve Smith (character name)
@ XtGamer68 (GamerTag/ID below, in smaller letters and a different color perhaps(?).)

It's called roleplaying.

If you are utterly bereft of imagination, you can simply accept their default name and have multiple people named CHARACTER NAME.

This never actually occured to me. Looks like I'll need to start brainstorming names for my MP characters before march.

I name my humans with names similar to something like Delta Force (Nightmare, Fog, Ghost, Pharaoh, etc.) Other species get their traditional names.

Seriously, that's great. I name my characters just for fun, but it's great to hear they'll be mentioned in my main mission.

I never thought about that, I think I'll have to do that when the main game comes along.

It helps in sorting the save files.

For example, your canon can be named Steve, secondary can be Dave.

I'm all for this, I just wish the Character name displayed in-game, instead of my GT.

It would be nice if the names displayed in game. It would increase the role-playing feel of MP. I'd feel less like I was playing with people online (who have been awesome, don't get me wrong) and more like I was part of a true special forces squad. My human Sentinel is named Tech because of her firm belief in being a tank over being a shooter.

I think that was the OP's point all along, it was just missed. Why name them if the name is not used in the actual gameplay, only on your Character Screen? People see them all as your gamertag anyways.

More or less this.

It'd be great though if the characters we promoted were added to the campaign asset's update thing, if nothing else saying 'UPDATE: [character] was promoted after meritorious service in various engagements to the rank of N7' or something like that. That way I can remember who I have and don't have. =/

I was a bit disappointed to see that the names aren't actually displayed anywhere except in the character screen. I don't even see them as assets in the sp game because they're all lumped together as just N7 assets.

It's a bit too bad because I generally enjoy coming up with names. On the other hand, I now feel free to come up with the full gamut of silly names. I have Krogan named Oral-B because his armor is toothpaste colored. I named my human adept Taffy and my current asari adept is Barbarella. Since no one sees the names but me, I don't have to ever explain them.
