To make new local variables I need to edit a 2da file. 2da files are made with Excel. What version of Excel do I need? Does it need to be the newest or will a older one work? The toolset wiki is down for me at the moment but I didn't see a version when I looked.

I'd imagine any version, but doesn't Excel cost money?

The .2DA files in all of Bioware's games to date, as far as I know, have all been plain text. You can edit them in Notepad, if that's what you want to do. Any version of Excel, from the very first to the very latest, should be able to edit them fine.

This time they really are in excel files not just text files.

Get OpenOffice instead.  Can open any version of Excel file including the xlsx files of the latest version (with the crappy ribbon interface - seriously, Microsoft, what were you thinking?!).

All of the Dragon Age 2DA files that I've seen are the old Excel 95/97 (BIFF) format. If you don't have Excel, you can try using a cheap/free program that reads and writes Excel 95/97 files like spread32 (google it) or Open Office. I have used spread32 to edit a few 2DA files and was able to see the changes in the toolset, so it probably works.

Why'd they switch to actual excel file format? Does it give them any benefits instead of the old plain text version? Are the files actually formatted, making use of multiple workbooks, etc?

Yes, yes, and yes Posted Image

More specifically, read the 2DA page for all information.

Wayyyyy better than just a text file. (In my opinion) Fields with data in cells is much easier to jump around in than trying to go to the 80th spot in a single row of text.

Way better than a text file because they are compiled to a binary data format to be much faster to read in game.
