From www.kotaku.com.au/2012/02/kotor-mass-effect-dragon-age-writer-leaves-games-behind/

Drew Karpyshyn, who’s been a writer at BioWare for over a decade now, will be walking away from the games business to focus on his novels.

In that decade, Karpyshyn contributed to some of the best-written video games of all time, including Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, the first two Mass Effect games and most recently Star Wars: The Old Republic. He’s also written for the Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights series.

During that time he’s also increasingly been dabbling in those series’ associated novels, penning books based on Baldur’s Gate, Mass Effect and Star Wars. And it’s that kind of work Karpyshyn will be pursuing more of, as he retired from BioWare as of last week.

That's some sad news to hear, atleast he managed to go on right up until Shepard's sequel. :(

Ahh that's a shame. Loved his Mass Effect books, especially the first; Ascension was it?

Wish him the best for the future though :)

if you go back and read his books prior to 10 years ago they are better than the book over the past 10 years, there is probably a reason for that.

Here's what IGN had to say,

Star Wars: The Old Republic lead writer Drew Karpyshyn has left BioWare.

In a post on his blog, Karpyshyn posted that he's "leaving to focus more time and energy on my novels and other non-video game related projects." He notes that he's "not going to be severing all ties" with BioWare and that he's "in the process of writing the next Star Wars: The Old Republic novel."

Previously, Karpyshyn served as lead writer on Mass Effect 1 and 2, as well as Star Wars: The Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic. He also contributed to Jade Empire, Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights and has written novels set in the Star Wars and Mass Effect universes.

"During my time at BioWare I worked on a number of beloved and award winning titles," Karpyshyn wrote. "I'm proud of everything we accomplished, and I know going forward that BioWare will continue to live up to its well deserved reputation for making the best story driven games in the industry. The story and dialog in any BioWare game is the result of an entire team of writers working together, and I often felt I received an excessive amount of the credit for the games we created. The Dragon Age games and the continued success of the Mass Effect series after my departure make it pretty clear that BioWare can get along just fine without me, and I'm looking forward to experiencing the games as a fan rather than from the other side of the fence."

This is a sad day in gaming... and in the novel world...for games... the first 3 books of Mass Effect were amazing! The last book was a tsunami-sized disaster due to bioware choosing some cheap hack to write their latest novel...

Well, dang. It's sad to hear he's leaving the gaming industry, as the industry needs more writers like him.

Well I guess its time for other writers to shine with Bioware. He is right his spot leaves one for another to take his mantle. Perhaps Mac Walters or other talented writers.

No, that's not how it works. It's the peons that get kicked off when sales turn bad. The leaders of the company get all of the job security.

You forgot to paste the end comment from Kotaku's article, Terror...

"Hopefully this means he can go back to doing Mass Effect books (he did the first three), so its publishers don’t have to release any more patches. For a novel."

Yes, he will be missed. He's not a legend or something like that, but he's capable of writing good stories and has the verve of putting his own style into them.
