So everyone knows that there are two types of "booster packs": recruit and veteran.  What you don't know is that what's in those.  Well, after reading this post, you will.

The short version is this: if you want to upgrade your default weapons (the five you start the game with), or to get some basic weapon mod (assault rifle recoil, sniper rifle ammo, SMG ammo, pistol scope, or shotgun accuracy), or add customization to your default class (the six human classes), or to get some low-level single-use items, you should get recruit pack.

If you want ANYTHING else, veteran is the way to go.

--------------------------------------

The long version:

If you are interested in knowing my qualifications, I now own almost every color customization on my basic six human classes (i.e. I have had four additional color unlocks for each basic class).  I also own Avenger X (yes, level 10), Predator X, Katana X, Mantis X and Shuriken X.  So yes, I bought tons of recruit packs (mainly to get to Mantis X).

I believe there are three basic item rarity levels: common, uncommon, rare.

In recruit packs, you usually get 5 common items (1 each).  Getting uncommons here will be quite difficult (but it happens once in a while).

So what are these "common" items?  They include:
--upgrades of the default guns in each class: Avenger, Predator, Katana, Mantis and Shuriken.
--one type of weapon mod for each weapon: assault rifle stability damper (less recoil), pistol scope (add scope and accuracy), shotgun smart choke (accuracy), sniper rifle spare thermal clip (spare ammo) and SMG magazine (spare ammo).
--class color unlocks for the six basic human classes
--LV1 ammo: Armor Piercing, Cryo, Disruptor, Incendiary, and Warp
--LV1 armor module: Adrenaline (movement), Cyclonic (shield), Power Amplifier (power damage), and Power Efficiency (power cooldown)
--LV1 rail amp: for each weapon type
--single use consumables: missile, medi-gel, survival pack, thermal clip pack

In veteran packs, you get 1 uncommon for sure, and the rest is less clear-cut.  You can expect to get some single use consumables, and they come in lots of three.  You can also expect LV2 ammo/armor module, or LV1 rail amp, but these comes individually.

So what are those "uncommons"?  They include (this part is probably less accurate than the one above):
--the other normal guns in each class: Viper, Scimitar, Tempest, Locust, Mattock, and Phalanx
--the other weapon mods: barrels (damage), etc.

About the "rare" category—there is no package that will guarantee a rare item, so it’s really by chance.  I’m not sure which package to get for these items.

My knowledge of the "rare" category is quite limited.  It seems to include the following:
--Widow, Revenant, Claymore, Carnifex, Hornet
--racial unlocks in the third column (salarian infiltrator, asari
adept, krogan soldier, quarian engineer, turian sentinel, drell
vanguard), or human gender unlocks
--racial unlocks in the fourth column (salarian engineer, asari vanguard, krogan sentinel, quarian infiltrator, turian soldier, drell adept)

That's a very useful guide, thank you!

I've only bought Recruit packs so far (I figured I won't have that much playtime during the demo so that I might as well buy what I can) and what I got so far does match your guide.

I'd say that recruit packs are probably a good choice if you want more medigel or rocket ammo or like the basic weapons, but the chance of getting an uncommon are indeed reaaally low (Got none so far).

OP might wanna mention the color of the item in the pack; common = ??? border (maybe Blue I think), white border = uncommon & gold = rare I believe.

Otherwise great and informative post, thanks for helping me understand this better. Looks like Veteran Packs from here on out... =)

Assuming this is all true (and I have no reason to believe otherwise), this is a great guide. Good thing I was buying Veteran packs all along already. Bought probably ~20 Veteran packs and still no rares. Hmmm.

I really want that Widow.

Good info. Largely what I was expecting, but nice to have someone with considerably more experience backing that up. Thanks OP!

Good info, it looks like I should buy some recruit packs for the full game, I've been just buying the veteran ones but lack simple upgrades for guns.

From my experience this also seems to be the case. I've got 3 of the "rare" gold backgrounded weapons but not one of the gold race unlocks (Turian soldier, etc.). The "rare" ones only came from the veteran packs.

So it is possible to unlock characters in the final column?

What happens when you unlock all the common items? Sounds like OP is close, maybe just missing some higher ranks of the weapon mods. Does your chance of gaining an uncommon from recruit packs increase? Or do you just end up getting more consumables?

I think you are mistaken on the difference between Uncommon and Rare characters.

If you notice, when you buy the Veteran packs, you are guaranteed at least one uncommon or rare, and look at the color of the frame on those: uncommons are silver, rares are gold, and this includes the characters from the 3rd spot. I believe all of the character unlocks are considered "rare," along with a few of the guns. (Phalanx is "uncommon" but the Carnifex is "rare" since one is silver framed, the other is gold)

Thank you for this info! I've also been wondering how it breaks down, since I have the human colours as well as several level X weapons.

Thanks for the information... quite helpful.

I wonder if more weapons will be unlocked when we get the other areas of play ( i.e. more races, more maps ). I'd like my Geth Plasma Shotgun. :D

From what I've seen you just get consumables and XP packs regardless if the class is already maxed out on xp and appearance options.

If you guys have noticed the borders around some items are silver and gold. example: asari adept is outlined in gold, scimitar VII etc. is outlined in silver. Silver is uncommon and gold is rare.

Locust is rare? I've used that gun once. I feel the need to try it out again.
