Which I think separates it from the rank-and-file zombie games out there.
I'm hoping this does well enough on PS3 to become cross-platform, as otherwise, I'm never going to play it.

I'm not sure anything can separate it from the rank and file zombie games since there may be more zombie games than anything else in the industry. It still reeks of a Hollywood attempt in gaming of 28 days later...hasn't this been done already?

For someone who doesn't even care about a PS3 title you sure do weigh in a lot about it.
I've read multiple interviews that say "its not a zombie game" There will be a certain zombie element to it sure (something has to cause this kind of plant style end of the world) But the idea that I'm getting is that you will be facing off against other humans more than the zombies. And the style of these zombies already push it against those other ones. It sounds more like a jumping off point for the story not a reason to just have zombies to shoot pew pew.

The gameplay segment they demonstrated at E3 showed the girl doing things like distracting your enemies so you can get the jump on the them, enemies that can tell if you are out of ammo and rush you, fighting that uses context to tell if you should shoot an enemy or use the butt of your gun in a melee attack.
All in all, concepts that are interesting enough to at least keep the game on your radar, whether you have a PS3 or not.

I'm worried about the multiplayer though, that hit me hard.

Interestingly enough, the 'infected' in this game don't act like zombies until much later on in the process. They can talk, use weapons, be deceptive, set traps... all the things you would expect out of human enemy combat. Their infection just possesses them with a strong compulsion to infect others to the exclusion of all other things.
Which I think separates it from the rank-and-file zombie games out there.

Well, you're getting your hopes up for nothing then. Sony owns Naughty Dog...
Here is a gameplay video in case anyone missed it:

Pay attention to the AI in this game.

PA happens to be my favorite setting for novels, movies and games, so I say, go ahead and rehash away, Naughty Dog.

I had no idea that ants could perform self-fellatio. That's also a really fascinating fungus. Weaponize that and you could wipe out the world.

Nice plug. Still makes it yet another zombie game.

Even if it is--which I don't agree it is--the game is way better than any other "zombie" game that I've seen.
The game's basis is on a infection that takes time to infect. It's not like the rage virus in something like 24 hours later. It slowly deteriorates them over time. This can have really great gameplay mechanics if done right. Based on the gameplay video alone of what we've seen, it looks unique. Show me another game that plays like what we've seen so far?
And that's not even including what else is in the game. It was a short demo only a couple minutes long. The AI in this game is so fantastic, it has so much potential. I can't even imagine how infected react in this game.
Also, Naughty Dog's cinematic presentation is some of the best in the industry. So I'm on board with this game for sure.
Thank god somebody is molding a survival game with cinematic value--finally. No more running around strapped down like Rambo blowing people away. I hate that in these apocalyptic games. This game looks to be about actual survival...and the bond you build with the girl.
I even hope they take it to another level and add something mundane like building a fire at night to protect against exposure. But you risk giving you position away to enemies in the area. So you make a choice. Would be cool in a open world survival game with day/night cycles though. I doubt it but one can dream.
I was happy to see it has a crafting system in the game. Personally, I wanted it where I interact with my environment like Fallout 3 and scavenge everything to build items. Doesn't look to have that depth and is streamlined but at least it's there. The health system is awesome too. No more health regeneration and back to the oldschool formula of patching yourself up. Real-time inventory management in combat to add suspense? I'm sold.
I can't wait for this game!!

The above video also mentions that Naughty Dog will not focus on the infected. the infected will make appearances, but they aren't the focus of the game. The Last of Us is much more about the factions, the struggles between the last humans in a zombie apocalypse and the relationship between Joel and Ellie.
If I didn't already have a PS3, I'd definitely buy one for this game, IMO.

Have they showed any gameplay videos of it yet?
I don't really care either way. Naughty Dog is one of the few devs in the industry that have shown they can make a game with great SP AND MP.
This is their A-team, so I'm not concerned at all about it. I'm mostly in it for the SP experience. Uncharted has fantastic cinematic presentation in their SP.
I actually find myself playing Uncharted's MP a lot and I'm not usually heavy into the MP scene. It takes a strong MP game to hold my interest.

How does multiplayer invalidate the single player campaign? All of the Unchrted games were executed perfectly as was Max Payne 3 and multiplayer didn't ruin the single player campaign.

How does that validate what Naughty Dog does though...?
That makes no sense. ND is a different developer and they've already established they can make great MP without hurting the SP...
Most games that focus on SP and then add MP are outsourced. It happened in Bioshock 2 and ME3. In ME3, they outsourced it to their satellite team in Montreal. It wasn't even developed by the main ME team. It didn't hurt the quality of ME3's SP and Last of Us will probably be shorter than ME3.
I thought ME3 was about the same length as ME2 but it was much higher in quality with more varaibles that play into dialogue/gameplay...

Umm ok... But I meant an example where multiplayer ruins a game that would've been good otherwise. ME3's addition of multiplayer didn't ruin the game it was bad on it's own. Arkham City didin't have it so it's not a valid example. Either way, Naughty Dog's proven they can do both side by side and have both the sinlge player and multiplayer as best as anyone could.

Yes, they definitely have examples of SP games that have crappy MP. Assassin's Creed, Dead Space and Bioshock 2 all come to mind. But they also have examples of games that do both great.
It just so happens ND had already proven they can do both great...and they're making Last of Us. So...yea.
