And I think (for me) it's because for the first time in the Mass Effect franchise ever it actually matters which enemy unit you are fighting.
Up to now they basically were all the same, different skin, different layers of protection but overall just point your gun(or finger for the biotics) and shot. The diversity in combat was completely lacking.
With ME3 you have Guardians, Combat Engineers with turrets and damn was I surprised and pleased when I first encountered the Nemesis and especially the Phantom. Awesome stuff and it feels like you're actually fighting a capable enemy with highly trained fighters not just some cannon fodder.
I think this is a huge step in the right direction and while I was sceptical of the MP when they first announced it, it seems that BioWare has really pulled it off thanks to this.
So, a big kudos to the game designers involved.
(now just fix the controls and all is well
*Can't really say anything regarding SP as I'm refusing to play it before the actual game release.
