Hornet SMG Usage Tips

 Just thought I'd throw this out there, as a hand to anyone else who has unlocked it.

The Hornet is that SMG that Assault Troopers wield, and it's a Rare unlock. It's burstfire, and has some pretty significant weight. It has kinda meh accuracy, and massive recoil... when you scope it.

If you just hipfire with it, you tend to always hit within the little (       ) reticule, even at range. It has a really fast burstfire rate, and in my experience, it can outdamage an Avenger fired on full auto. 

I use it as my Infiltrator's only weapon, and cooldowns are still pretty quick. Use it at point-blank in conjunction with Cryo Blast, and it works just as well as a shotgun. If you have the damage evolution on Tactical Cloak (or maybe with Adrenaline Rush, I dunno, I haven't tried it yet) I can 3-shot Nemeses, and it absolutely KILLS Phantoms if you keep them running after you about 10 feet away.

Thanks. I got it in my very first pack, before I got a Phalanx, and the unupgraded Avenger is craptacular for a low-level Infiltrator, so I tried it out, was turned off by the recoil, and ignored. I picked it up again yesterday and out of curiosity, tried hipfiring.

It's now one of my favorite guns in the MP demo, only short of my scoped, +90% stability Avenger VII:devil:

I got the hornet, and I found that it works well with my Drell Vanguard. Throw a pull and get behind cover. In cover, the Hornet is EXTREMELY accurate, and I completed an entire Gold run with some friends on White and only used the Hornet. It takes a little getting used to, but the pay off is massive!

I just got it also and was turned off by the accuracy. I used it on my engineer who had been currently using an Avenger 3 with scope and stability as his only weapon.

I'll try it on a different class and hipfire with it.

I'll give it another shot, then. I was really turned off by the muzzle climb, but I didn't try hip firing.

So there's another SMG. Good to know, because I already got Shuriken, Tempest and Locust, and they aren't worth anything. I have to empty a whole clip on a basic enemy... I was so happy when I unlocked Locust, because in ME2 that was the best weapon, but here, it's probably the worst...

I tried the Hornet in the demo and tossed it away as trash - the recoil was just insane. However, as I've been getting my weapons to X, I've been trying them out at least once. (Yep, was running around with a Locust X in Gold and doing fine thank you.)

Playing w/ some friends, I was surprised to find out that the Hornet's actually pretty great (well, having dozens of SMG Rail Amp III's collected helps). I'm using the Damage Barrel, Extended Clip, and some ammo (Cryo's fun) and been rocking it w/ my 200% classes. The secret seems to be shooting from cover, which basically gives you pinpoint accuracy w/ close to no recoil.

Both me and a friend manage to rack up 100K+ scores in Cerberus Golds w/ Human Engineers. Unless you have AP III, it probably wouldn't be very effective against Reaper armored units, but good for picking up the trash while the biotics deal w/ the big guys.

Not convinced it beats out the Carnifex, but it's definitely viable and a nice change of pace.

I have Hornet VII and it's beast. Just aim for center mass so the 3rd bullet hit the head :P

My Hurricane is more fun. Quarian infiltrator with 30% less SMG weight means I have 190% cooldown. I use it like a shotgun, and like you I don't scope as the recoil is harder to control. Its not a carnifex, but awesome for panic spraying as its a super bullet hose.I ditched the extended barrel for two add-ons which allow more bullets per clip.

Sadly, I did not get the Hurricane, so the Hornet will probably be my SMG of choice, due to damage and accuracy.

Haven't unlocked it yet, but I'm hoping to. I wish I could compare, but from people's recent comments, it seems that they may have nerfed the in-cover recoil for the Hornet. IIRC, in the demo, it was pretty much unusable scoped, no matter where you were standing.

you must play on Bronze or Silver & mostly against unarmored Cerebrus... they're fine vs. unarmored units but

but
shoots about 3 bullets per burst, 5 bursts per second or about 15-16 bullets in a second if you can hit all bursts on the target in a second

Against armored units like Brutes, Banshees, etc --it'll do just 6 points of damage per bullet at level 1 or 20 points at level X.

or 90 points of Damage per Second at level 1 weapon or 300 DPS at weapon level X.

For comparison,
Widow is 867-1083 per shot
Carnifex is 276-345 per shot, 1.6 shots per second .. about 460-575 DPS
Phalanx is 114-143 pers hot, 5 shots per second .. about 478-595 DPS

with the Extended Barrel V mod (+25% damage), they do even more since percentages give bigger gains with bigger numbers

Two things:
1)Why the hell is everything bold?
2)Your analysis of the Hornet DPS is flawed. The Hornet has a minimum refire rate that is not mentioned within the spreadsheet, thus lowering the dps as its average RoF is not the same RoF that's in the spreadsheet. Every other burst weapon has this minimum refire rate, it's safe to assume the Hornet does aswell.

Edit: It would take 1.44 seconds to empty a non-modded Hornet clip if one doesn't account for that minimum refire rate [24 rounds per clip / (1000 rpm / 60 secs) = 1.44 seconds].
It takes in reality approximately 2.1 seconds.
