About the player not having any real choice, I think that applies pretty much to the entire CRPG genre, not just Dragon Age.
You just can't have the same amount of freedom in a computer game that you have in a P&P game. While in real life the DM can improvise entire areas, characters and conversations in seconds, creating that content takes days or weeks to create for a CRPG, and the devs would have to think of every possible outcome for every possible action, which is just impossible to do.
So by that logic we've never had a "real" RPG video game that lets you do whatever you want and roleplay whoever you want.. and yeah that may actually be true.
Most games just take the combat system from P&P (and even dumb that down a little), add some story and dialogue and call that plot-driven tactical combat simulator an "RPG". And that is what Dragon Age basically is, as well as most, if not all other crpgs. It's not necessarily good, but it's the best we have.

I dont understand the whole "Roleplaying = being able to do anything I want" thought. There are always contraints on the ROLE you are playing. DnD PnP I was never allowed to be a cyborg alien ninja from the 87th dimension with hands for feet and feet for hands. I was not allowed to stop half way thru a dungeoun and say "I wanna roll a fat J sit down and cook some waffles" I was a ass kicking barbarian I would not just stop and say "hey lets go pick some flowers, help old ladies across the dtreet, and hug trees guys!!!".
Sure PnP has less contraints and they are further out there but its not a free for all I do whatever whenever I want no matter how story breaking it is.
I could only imagine the OP
DM "your village is under attack by a horde of...."
OP "umm no its not, I dont like that choice, my choice is that it is snowing and its just a normal day. WHATY I CANT MAKE THIS CHOICE? WTF THIS IS NOT RPG THIS IS NOT SUMMONER HAVE YOU PLAYED
SUMMONER NO YOU HAVE NOT SO YOU KNOW AND HAVE NO CONCEPT OF ANYTHIGN EVER!!!!!"
Then his head explodes because there can not be that much stupidity contained in one person.

He's got a point in a way.
I mean, I love reading all this stuff, everything I can, digging up as many Codex Entries as I can, just to learn as much as I can about the world, but after my first playthrough, its basically just going through the motions, I can almost recite on memory what the Guard at the end of the Ostagar Bridge will say, as well as most of the other NPCs in that area. Yet you have to do it, because if you don't you miss out on valuable stuff, and might lose out on exp/other stuff you don't know about because your to worried not to do it.
And no offense to all the high and mighty in this thread, neither DA:O or really any other Bioware game is a "story-based RPG", they are called "tactical RPGs", and are very unlike many other RPGs which are more hack and slash driven. Some people may like tactical RPGs but might not like tons of story, is that a crime?
Fair enough but what do you consider a true RPG? From the standards some people put out here the only game i can come up with as a true RPG is the old 90's MuD's. If we move away from the computer genre than i would say older versions of D&D. I mean has anyone seen 4th edition D&D yet? It plays like a pointless MMO now rather than an RPG. Story is all but nonexistent and replaced by mindless hack and slash and talents. If you compare it to DAO well DAO wins on story hands down, which is really pathetic.
Zero i think you need to come to terms with what i did years ago after the MuD's sort of dried up and Everquest/Ultima Online took over. True RPG's no longer exist because they do NOT sell. There's a reason WoW is so stupidly popular and a whole generation of gamers think it's what a true RPG is. Sadly they do not know how awful of a game it really is and that is basically a pack of cigarett's bundled into a gaming box and sold to underage kids to get them hooked online.
We are never going to have old school RPG's back because of the bottom line. It is a sad thing to say but one that i have accepted to a degree. I enjoy this game as a dialog riven adventure RPG and not as somethign that allows me to go do whatever i want, which is an illusionin games anyway. You only think you have freedom but in reality you have less freedom than you think.
FYI i don't think Zero is a troll, i just think he's about where i was a few years ago finally realising that this is about the best we will get from gaming companies now in the RPG genre. the instant gratification, hach and slash kiddies have the superior purchasing power and they are marketing to them.
But you never played summoner so you have no concept of space, time, history, waffles, apples, or RPG's...
If hes not a troll then he is the most thickheads ****wad walking the earth right now. There is no game that would stand up and hold true of his increadible narrow view of what a RPG is. Not even summoner lets you make the kind of choices he wants to and I can not think of any game that allows you to do anything at anytime whenever you want. PnP video games either way there has always been some type of contraints.
So now all the sudden you are a psychic and know exactly what games i have and haven't played? I never said i didn't play Summoner. In fact if you want my opinion on the game itself i would call it Diablo with some real RPG elements. The AI in the game sucks and just because it has online support doesn't automatically make it the be all end all. Certainly being able to choose the path of your choice gives it more freedom than DAO but is going off and playing littl emore than diablo or Dungeon Siege all that impressive? I guess you could say it has more replayability but honestly i don't really see the joy in that unless you like those mindless hack and slash kill games with infinite enemies.
However i definetly put the game light years ahead of those traditional retarded hack and slash games that pretend to be RPG's, IE the diablo clones. I see it about on par with DAO but appealing to a totally different section of the gaming population.

Right boys n girls.
Ye all need to be calmin doon and stop fightin wi each other cos its just no right. Awe right?
The issue aboot RPGs versus FPSs. Can ah just say that ah dinnah like FPS games like AT AWE, and that I played the Halo games and find they arent mindless at awe?
That they were really fun and immersive for whit they are?
Folks areney necessarily stupit if they like FPSs or smart if they like RPGs.
I also baith agree and disagree wi the OP.
Disagree cos ah think he's a bit of a moron who aint even payin nae attention to the dialogue in game at awe. Ah think hes just clickin right thru it awe withoot readin or listenin or anythin.
At least thats the impression hes gave me.
That bein the case, it boggles mah mind how he can say the dialogue is unncessary. How the hell would ye know if ye've no ruddy listening or read any o' it?
If ye actually take the time to listen and read then most of it is indeed necessary and sensible.
But ah says ah also agree wi the Sandal like OP. Why ye wonder?
Well ah think that bioware did include a lotta extraneous information in the game. Also the dialogue wis exceptionally wordy.
And it can get a bit tiresome especially on subsequent playthrus, where ur havin to "click, click, click" to get thru a convo cos he's still witterin on and uve finished readin what hes on about 5 minutes ago.
But ah also think that Bioware did this fir a guid reason.
They created a whole new world fir us to explore and that was completely alien tae us; so they had to include all the lore fir it all in the game otherwise they be flooded wi complainers oan here givin it big licks aboot stuff no makin any sense to them because of a lack of background information.
But the point is the vast majority of the background "unnecessary" stuff is in the codex to be read OPTIONALLY.
Ah think that this wis the right approach personally.
So nae mair arguin. Cos this OP is either just lookin fir a fight or really genuinely honestly completely stupit.
*Turns off thick accent and goes back to talking normally*
So yeh. Just ya know DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.
That is all.

is this strawman village? every other post is a ****ing strawman fallacy.
dude is trying to say "whats the point of giving you apparent "options" when in the end there is only one actual outcome... in other words, why give you the option to select "no i dont want to join the grey wardens" when even after you choose that option, you get another tree that says "ok i iwll join". Thus the redundancy of the game dialogue choices"
I cannot find any evidence to see that the OP is against dialogue,
but instead the unnecessary dialogue sections which are clearly just fillers.
and all you strawman idiots can say is "oh, so you buy a game about joining the grey wardens and dont want to join the grey wardens, wtf"
what the **** does that comment have to do what hes trying to say.
i dont know if you idiots are actually or pretending to be incapable of understanding an explicit statement.

Which was also addressed - pretty much every single conversation has a "give me the short version" or equivilant that lets you skip the actual conversing part of conversations.
Further, I point you to this:
Which is pretty damning. It pretty much puts everything other than Dungeon Siege, Torchlight, Diablo and the like out of the running. None of the Fallout series, Ultima series, or the TES series meet that criteria.ZeroMystic wrote...

Well, we tried logical arguements, but they won't work with him. Bottom line is he's a troll who just wants to kvetch about the game because it's not what he wants. He's gone way WAY past 'discussion' and into 'whining'. Besides, as I've pointed out you don't have to become a gray warden. Since it's been established you either become a gray warden or die, just say 'NO" when the question comes up then shut down the game. Because death usualy equates with 'game over, dude'.

Fix the memory leak please, Bioware!
I'm on a monster of a system - HP Blackbird L002 - and the map trael with all the blood droplets is still slow after an hour or so. If it's the first thing I do when I boot up the game, it's quick and speedy, and random encounters load in a split second. If I go from Start to Lothering, it's already starting to lag.

Maybe you should actually go out and buy the disk installation instead of digitally downloading it.
More uneducated people just keep popping up left and right. I got news for you, the only people that are reporting this issue, are all the people who have it digitally downloaded.
An actual problem within a game effects every single person who owns it the same way regardless of how they obtained it, not just a small handful of people.
You going to try to tell me that this issue decides to skip some people and not others...LULZ
Things don't work like that.
You trying to say there is a leak in the game is exactly the same as saying this:
Theer is a shippment of pipes that are going to 1500 houses and each pipe has a sure crack in it that when used sprays water, and after all 1500 pipes have been installed only 50 people are saying the pipe has a leak.
Sorry but a leak effects everyone if there was an actual problem in the game itself.
Your problem is you digitally downloade digitally downloaded it.
