The Random Item system is far too extreme and detracts from the overall experience of the multiplayer.

A system where items are purchased is certainly not at all a bad idea. Actually, it certainly seems to fit the theme of an RPG like Mass Effect, and it also provides a reward system for the players. But the extreme extent to which things are randomized has certainly dampened the entire experience of the multiplayer, at least for me. Granted, we don't know if things will be like this in the full game, but I am concerned enough where I want to make my opinion heard.  Also, sorry for the lengthy post.

1. The system feels more like something you would encounter in a Trading Card Game, or an MMO, where players constantly grind orquest for only a small chance of unlocking the item they are looking for. Those games certainly have large followings, but I don't think this is what Mass Effect should be about.

2. Several times I have saved up for packs, hoping for something new, and they all contained items I already owned. I have unlocked the Mattock Assault Rifle 4 times, and the Female Human Vanguard twice. I am aware that weapons appear to level up as you unlock them subsequent times, but if you do not have an interest in using that weapon to begin with, it really sucks to get it again. And why is it even possible to recieve the same class multiple times?

3. I remember watching the trailer for the multiplayer, and my friends and I were extremely excited to play it. We were constantly discussing what classes we were going to pick, and what races we would choose. I could not wait to get my hands on a Krogan, especially the Soldier, and I wanted to get my hands on the Revenant so I could unleash hails of bullets while lumbering around like a juggernaut.

When I entered the muliplayer and saw that you only start with a few items and classes, I was okay with that. I thought to myself, "I'll just play the Human Soldier and use the Avenger assult rifle until I unlock my Krogan and the Revenant!"

Well, around 12 hours of gameplay later, and countless Veteran packs purchased, and I have not unlocked any of those two things I was so excited to try. Actually, in all my time of playing, I have only unlocked one new class. Just one. To say I am disappointed is an understatement.

We are at the third game in an awesome series, and many players have become attached to a specific class or a specific weapon they have used in previous games, because it suits their playstyle the best and gives them the most enjoyable experience.  I don't feel like I should be pigeonholed into playing a different way because I happen to not have unlocked the items and classes I am interested in.

Is there a reason it has to be like this? Couldn't we simply be given the option to purchase the weapons or classes we are interested in trying? Or perhaps we could get guaranteed weapon or class unlocks as we level up?

I like to logon with my friends for a couple hours every few nights and fight back against the Reapers. I don't want to spend hours grinding and buying booster packs to unlock the stuff I want, and I know I can't be the only one that feels this way.

I know I could be barking up the wrong tree because these things might be included at launch, but I definitely get the impression the multiplayer is close to finished, and that the item system we are testing is what will be in the final game. Thoughts/opinions?

I think the current system is fine, but you shouldn't be able the get items you already have.

There is no item that you can get that doesnt benefit you in some way. A weapon unlock for the second time will upgrade it, same goes with weapon mods. If you get a character pack again it will add custimization and xp.

To answer those that are posting:

Regarding character upgrades:
You are correct that you do not get more customization but you still do get experience (in the scope of the demo it is 12500 from either pack). If that character is level 20 you still will get the packs for that, there is a reason behind that and you will see in the full game.

As it has been said a few times already, it is possible to get character and weapon unlocks even when they are maxed  out. So no, not everything is useful.

I believe I addressed the character question in the previous post. As for the weapon thing, I have not seen anyone saying they got a weapon after it was finished being upgraded to X. If you could point me to such a post I will happily investigate the issue at hand, I have yet to see that myself and I do play a lot of MP

is it possible to get the character pass lvl 20 with the packs?

wut?
sorry if im just blind but i didnt see you posting anything about armors?

Sorry I didn't mean the armors, I meant this topic in general:

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give you some info that may or may not be encouraging :)   we've noticed a healthy amount of debate around the reinforcement pack system and the random nature of unlocks.

In the demo, we recognize it can be difficult to unlock exactly the race/class/weapon you want to use without considerable play time.

What I can tell you is this: although the system is not likely going to go away, the demo has approximately half of the unlockable content that is present in the full game. While I can't speak to the chances of getting a very specific unlock, in general you should see more/better rewards from the packs you earn.

If I may:

When you say "content", does that include weaponry? I'm just - I admit I'm jonesing for the Eviscerator. It's my favorite shotgun. Maybe not the best, but it's my favorite (though I am really learning to appreciate the Scimitar, which is a nice consequence of this random loot thing), and I'm wondering if there might be more, even better shotguns just waiting for retail.

Oh yes, yes it does :) Like I said, there's about 2X as many cool weapons in the full game MP.

Although I said in a previous post that I don't like the current system, I've since changed my opinion. This system encourages you to play as classes you've never played before. My favorite class is Infiltrator (Sniper rifles FTW), but seeing how initially I only had a FEMALE infiltrator, I started playing as a Human Adept and got the Krogan Soldier in my starter package. I love now the human adept and the krogan soldier, and I've would never had considered it if not for this system. In fact I would be pissed if I got a Drell in the full version instead of a Krogan/Turian, but well maybe I'll be surprised.

This is what I found too. I was convinced I'd only play vanguard, but then I unlocked the Salarian infiltrator - now I play that all the time.

What I can tell you is in the full game, things will be easier to get and more rewarding - I just can't get really specific about why :)
