The Random Item system is far too extreme and detracts from the overall experience of the multiplayer.

I personally can't wait to see what it means to "promote" your character. Also, I'd like to respec my Turian sentinel, but if that's locked for the demo, I can live with that. It's not like demo progress will be carried over to the full game. Still, the demo is excellent!

I really like this system and thin that they should keep it, as it makes people, who aren't stubborn, to play other classes or use other weapon combinations. BioWare should not remove Recruit and Veteran packs. What they should do, is add more specific packs and packs like Elite or Spectre(Elite would give 1 guaranteed common item or better, and Spectre would give 1 guaranteed rare item.)

That said, they should at least implement an option to allow for players who want to the specific class, to choose the class they want at the beginning, so that they whine less.

Here's a question/suggestion:

Might we be able to buy 'weighted' packs, tailored towards certain categories? Costing more (notably more?) than the pure-random, but with the probability of something in your area of interest.

To make an example: the rookie pack costs 5000, but says you'll get an uncommon.

'Human pack' cost 10,000, but you you'll get a 50% chance at at least one Human-related class.

'Shotgun Pack Rookie' costs 8000, for a chance of a shotgun-related upgrade.

'Shotgun Pack Veteran' costs 1800, and gives the other stuff of a Rookie pack, but guarantees at least one shotgun-related pick (whether a weapon or mod).

You could make whatever categories you wanted. The more specific, the higher the cost, but the more likely to get what you wanted. 'Biotic', 'Tech', 'Weapons', 'Mods', 'Race X', 'class Y.'

I agree. Allow us to pay more to buy the upgrades we want. That, or trade with others. Or both.

It was added because it will keep people playing the multiplayer. I'm too tired to summarize it but I suggest you guys do some reading on psychology, specifically operant conditioning, reinforcement schedules, and how they relate to video games. Essentially, RNG makes it like gambling, and gambling is so addictive because of the random interval reinforcement schedule.

I liked the actual unlock way of the game, it keeps me playing a lot with the hope of getting new gear and races/classes that a want to play. With my starter pack I got a rare character (asari adept), and with my first veteran pack I got the (gold weapon) anti-material sniper rifle (unfortunately, I dont like to play with both haha). The only thing that is making me mad is getting over and over again the cursed human characters just for change armor colors and a small amount of XP. It's really an useless thing. Once unlocked, a character should have all the customization available to use. Would be much better than spamming the same class just to get new colors for armor.

Yeah, random unlocks is a terrible idea. Kinda kills the fun.

Can't agree more. The guy at BioWare who came up to this idea is some new guy who never played a game with unlocks before. Just terrible "feature".

I agree that it's nice to be nudged to play other classes. While I've had some duds (I don't think I'll be doing any Soldiering in the real game) I've enjoyed other classes that I probably wouldn't have looked at if not for having aliens locked off (Engineer, Vanguard).

I still hope there is some kind of "race unlocks only" pack in the main game that can be bought, though. I've been playing an embarrassing amount of the demo and still haven't unlocked many aliens at all.

I was thinking, how about splitting the packs down to "types" like Assault packs, Marksman packs, etc. with specific weapon types locked to the packs, but maintaining their rarity, or perhaps even raising it since the odds of getting them will be even higher.

After I unlocked the Krogan Soldier I think I literally saw red for like 3 hours playing MP and giggling maniacally. Now I just need to get the Revenant!

No seperating, only adding specific packs. Let the random packs remain for those who like the system as it is atm. They might add much expensier and more rewarding acks which I wrote in my post.

Random unlocks for weapons I can deal with. For characters it sucks. What if I had my heart set on playing a Turian soldier? I can't. What if I want to play a male infiltrator, nope, female human only. There needs to be some middle ground where you can guarantee what you are buying is at least in the ballpark of what you want. Random character packs that only give characters. Random weapon packs that only give weapons and upgrades. Even better would be if we could actually specify the race we want for an increased amount.

Every time I buy a Veteran Pack and don't see a Turian Sentinel (hell, Turian ANYTHING), I come one step closer to punching someone hard in the gut.

I hate the random unlock system so much it gets my blood boiling. I spend an hour playing matches just to be able to buy a pack and I end up getting somthing like this:

3x Cobra Missiles (yay)
Medigel (yay)
3 random crappy weapon upgrades (boo)
Upgrade to a weapon I never use or use effeciently without the upgrade (blarrghrglrglrgrghg)

All I want is a freaking character unlock I will USE. It seems that 1/5 veteran packs I buy has a character upgrade, and it's always (ALWAYS) a female human something.

The randomness keeps it fun and makes you want to keep going until you get that unlock you want so badly.

It also doesn't foster good relations between the developer and their community. But this is EA and NewBioWare we're talking about so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised...<_<

I don't know if you know this, but reading helps. If you look closely you can see that in the description of the packs, the recruit pack has a better chance of unlocking classes.....

This is EA implementing madden cards in Bioware's MP...

Also I have only unlocked 1 alien and it was the Salarian infiltrator, the only character I have unlocked. I'm a level 40 and have unlocked 1 character... Really? And this is a good system? Forcing me to use characters against my will.
Ps. The Salarian was purchased through a 5000 recruitment package, not the 20,000 slightly pointless one...

I actually like the random unlock system because it doesn't penalize you for experimenting. If you could just buy the items you wanted, the people who picked one class of gun right away would have better equipment faster. This way I get a gun and get to try it out with no downside. What really needs to be implemented alongside it is a player to player trading system, so you can try what you get and sell it if you don't like it.

It's a good system for what it is but we will have more choice come full game.  for instince all I have unlocked at level 37 is a tempest, Phanlanx, and Solarian Infiltrator

Sorry for DP

I think its funny that people keep saving up for veteran packs, when four recruitment packs give a better chance of getting a character and cost the same. Or so I have heard. I got all my characters out of the recruitment packs, I got some nice weapon and mods out of the veteran packs. Could just be me though.

I love the random packs. Gives a reason to play a class you haven't before. Never would have tried a Grell Vanguard but he's really fun. And my current fave is the human female sentinel. The demo has been out for just a few days now, you have no cause to complain as you will have many, many, many chances to get more classes/races.

I do not understand how it gives you a reason to play as a class you normally would not?
Yes,leveling up and trying different things,ok.
But what do the packs have to do with that? Just because you unlocked something you do not want, you are going to play with it now?

I'm a level 40... At this pace I could  finish playing MP, completely level up 2 or 3 characters, get burnt out,and may have never seen many of the different characters. Lame. You tell us we can play as alien races that we have never been able to. Then it is completely random and you have no choice in class, powers,or armors. It's all default and random?

I do like the random packs. I do not like the way they handled the characters.

I'm not a female and do not enjoy playing as one. Unless it was my only choice for a Quarian. Which seems to be the case thus far. But I can't even do that, because the game simply will not let me.
Is it to much to ask for a better way of unlocking characters.
