So let's agree that an actual multiplayer mod is impossible. Eh, not impossible I guess. Just rather hard to make given the tools available. But what about this:
How hard would it be to turn a save file into a recruitable character? Instead of being able to play with other people, you'd instead be able to play with their PCs. If you were to mass produce this mechanism, it'd likely have to be a standalone executable, but I don't see it being that complicated assuming all the relevant data is accessible.
