In marketing, it's all about getting people to buy NOW and not wait around. If they wait around, they're 5 times less likely to eventually buy it. It's just good business. They're not cheating anybody. The little things might help people to be like "oh, well I get something cool on top of the headset/controller" but it shouldn't be the sole reason you buy it. Also, considering there's zero confirmation on "FromDust" even being a legitimate DLC, let alone day 1, I'd say we can table that for now. It might very well be. It could be something that is available separately to people who buy used and don't get the "Alliance Network" online pass for buying new. We simply don't know the details yet.

A lot of the stuff you mentioned gave the same DLC, so you have inflated the total sum.
Spent some time trying to explain that to the writer at Destructoid who wrote that article. He was not very receptive.

All these DLC ideas wouldn't have been day one DLC had this been made by BioWare three or four years ago. It would have been ideas that became game content on the disk, or if it wasn't good enough, it would be thrown aside. Now it is getting all muddled together between "This is good bonus content, buy it, play it," and "If you don't want it, don't play it. The disk content is complete, so you are the problem." BioWare is heavily cozied up with EA's nickel and dime attitude.
Ten years ago, you would have been paying for premium modules for Neverwinter Nights.

Because Mass Effect 3 likely wouldn't have existed without EA's financial backing and marketing skills.AlanC9 wrote...

Well, four years ago none of the multiplayer content would have existed.
Come on guys. This is a good thing. We all know Bioware would have gone belly-up long ago without stepping into the 21st century. If ME2 had been as bad as ME1, the franchise would have been a flop, period.
Do I want all of this content? Of course not. I don't want any statues, and I don't care about a bunch of gun reskins. But those who swim in money and who can afford it, they will spend it, and they will support Bioware so they can keep on making these great games. Games that are great because of EA.

If you have to have all of that junk, then be my guest. But I still don't understand how BioWare offering choices to the consumer makes them evil. If you don't want it, don't buy it. It really is just that simple.
I agree with you. I just wonder what is the true intrinsic value of all this? Would any of this have any appreciation (in value that is) 10 years down the road? And please don't get me wrong, I loved the demo and I'm looking forward to the full game. But, wow, that's a crazy amount of money for people who are die hard collectors.
I used to collect comic books. I once owned a collection of more than 7,000 books. When it came time to part with my collection, I attempted to sell it off to a dealer. He didn't want them. I tried another dealer. He didn't want them. The third dealer said he would buy them, but only for .10 a piece. Granted, most of my books were about 30 - 40 years old, but a dime? The reason nobody wanted my books was because the creators were making reprints in trade paperbacks and that torpedoed the value of my collection. I lost money big time.
I did sell my collection of silver age books for a reasonable price, but that experience opened my eyes to a basic truth, your possessions are never worth what you think they are worth. I never collected anything again. If I want something, I buy it. But I never buy anything with the thought that it will appreciate in value.

the fact that I get a slip of paper or an email with a bunch of numbers and letters equating to a DLC code is just icing on the cake (granted I didn't get the book from B&N so meh). conversely though it seems like 99% of the BSN thinks they're paying for the the DLC and pretending the items doesn't exist or is the bonus

I think this is all a convoluted ploy to actually see how much they can trash the beloved franchise that is Mass Effect.

short of Bioware coming out and screaming exclusive content!!!!!!!111 as others pointed out, the MP DLC seems to be just the random packs you can get just by playing the game
if you get suckered into buying the figures / other items just because it has the DLC then it's your own fault imo.
so far the only SP DLC is found in the CE (and yes I'm discounting the From Dust DLC cause there's been ZERO information except some image of a recipet from some store)

Technology, the world, even the way we play games and communicate, have changed significantly since the days where a box on a videogame store shelf was the only way to get games.Tom Lehrer wrote...

I don't know about you, but I would never have had as much fun playing Rock Band if there were no DLC.and without Rock Band, I never would have discovered console gaming!
Without DLC and microtransactions, I certainly wouldn't have gone back to D&D Online or Lord of the Rings Online for a while if they hadn't enticed me with a free to play mode (where I also purchased things to enhance my game). Many of my DVD and Blu-Ray choices are based, in part, on what special features have been added. I also enjoy purchasing single or a few songs rather than an entire album from iTunes if I don't care for the entire album.
That's a bit misleading. If you total up the price of the products that provide extra content, yes, it'll get expensive, but the content is actually free with the purchase of a product. Also, as there can be many pieces of DLC for a game (such as, for example, for Fallout 3), it is entirely possible for the total price of all the content to be more than the cost of the original game.Sure some extra levels is nice but when did the gaming industry start charging several times the actual price of the game for extra content?
And of course, all of the extra content is completely optional. If you feel it is of value, then by all means, purchase it. If you like these other products that happen to include bonus content, then go for it! If, on the other hand, you don't feel these things are of value, don't buy it. it's entirely up to you.
