For graphic-quality/ performance tweaks, one can fully rely on the unencrypted config file which seemed to
have been kept around exactly for those reasons (even the name "GamerSettings" hint's at that).
\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 3\\BIOGame\\Config

These might be the more interesting entries:

allowshadowvolumes=False
bcheckparticlerendersize=True
bcombinesimilarmappings=False
benabletranslucenthairpass=False
brenderlightmapdensitygrayscale=true
forcepoweroftwoprocbuildinglodtextures=True
hack_usetickfrequency=FALSE
useprocbuildinglodtexturecropping=True
binitializeshadersondemand=True
allowradialblur=True
ambientocclusion=True
ballowbettermodulatedshadows=True
ballowlightshafts=True
ballowwholescenedominantshadows=True
benablebranchingpcfshadows=False
benablevsmshadows=False
busemaxqualitymode=False
compositedynamiclights=False
enableobstructionocclusion=false [Audio related]
ballowlightmapcompression=True
busebilinearfilterlightmaps=True
bfiltershadowfactor=False
busezeroarealightmapspacefilteredlights=False

Note that it's always good to keep a recent backup of the whole bioware folder, before you edit anything and even if you don't, as it also includes a profile file which stores your achievements; also usefull in case some ingame autosaving goes wrong!

Furthermore, if you're going to experiment, make sure you disabled any kind of forced optimizations (performance or visual Quality wise), through your drivers, no matter if on ATI or Nvidia cards! Eg. on ATI/ AMD cards disable advanced AI. and leave Texture filtering Quality at least on High to eliminate potential issues caused by these settings beforehand.

Yeah did try a few of them via altering coalesced.bin, admittedly not all. Especially if i didn't understand them.

Would just like to make the clarification that the coalesced file is not and never has been 'encrypted'. In Mass Effect 1 & 2 it was just an .ini file, and in Mass Effect 3 it is a .bin file - Bioware have (quite rightly) never intentionally prevented people from changing the settings in there.
There have as far as I know been no reports of people being banned for edited coalesced files (and I'm fairly certain that nothing you can change there would give you an unfair advantage anyway in multiplayer anyway). That said however, there are many examples of EA being draconian in their methods, so it's probably best to err on the side of caution when playing online, as others have said.

In my opinion all the evidence points to the problem not being one with shadows but instead with post processing, as black areas are 'crushed' into a low color depth. Therefore I don't think finding a way to turn off dynamic or baked shadows will solve the problem, but of course anything's worth a go when technical support are apparently nonexistent.

I really hope Bioware gets to fixing this. For me it's a worse problem in a lot of ways than the wonky character creator.

I get the same issue it really does look like shadows are 16 bit coloured also would be nice for high res textures my card is a ATI 4870x2.

This was also an issue for numerous users with Mass Effect 2. Some innovative users modified one of the game's shaders with respect to the depth of field component and significantly alleviated the issue of excessive darkess. Here is a link.

Basically what happens is that something in a shader related to the depth of field postprocessing causes an excessive shift of dark colours towards black. As a result, dark areas and shadows appear almost entirely black and subtle detail is lost so changing brightness, contrast and gamma have no alleviating effect.

Actually this is a different issue; it is not that the game is excessively dark as in the issue with ME2, but instead that those dark areas show a great amount of color banding (see screenshots in OP). It does seem like it has something to do with one of the depth of field shaders though, but sadly in ME3 they are not available for editing as they were in ME2.

Well the settings do appear (the whole filmic thingy that they altered for the me2 'fix)
under
bioengine.ini/filmictonemappingglut/

and there is 6 settings in it. Annoyingly i have no idea what those settings do, how to change them, or even if i'm looking at the right things.

No word yet? C'mon Bioware an acknowledgement is all we are asking, and relief knowing the problem is being patched. It may seem like we are squibbiling about a minor issue, but some sections of this game are down right hideous with this issue. Hate to see all that hard work look worse than a 10 yr old game.

Again Found something in coalesced.bin
In biogame.ini>sfxgame>bioworldinfo>defaultposrtprocesssettings=(bEnableDOF=TRUE,bEnableSceneEffect=TRUE,Bloom_Scale=0.2,DOF_BlurKernelSize=10.0,DOF_MaxNearBlurAmount=0.1,DOF_MaxFarBlurAmount=0.3,DOF_FocusInnerRadius=1000.0)
Again don't know, but since no DoF = no Bloom then issue may have something to do with bloom....?

Here is a link to some screenshot comparisons of mine with the depth of field option enabled vs disabled. I don't know if it is the same core issue or related but I was wondering how other people compare to my experience. In some circumstances, particularly scenes with low ambient light and lots of shadow, I feel as if I'm playing the game with heavy sunglasses on.

VoidRoamer: It seems the issues you're experiencing are indeed different. For comparison, here are a couple of images of what I get:
One
Two
It's significantly worse in less brightly-lit areas.
It seems both issues are indeed related to depth of field, so hopefully we can all get a solution soon.

On another note, the famously brilliant EA Support finally replied to my help ticket.
Here's what they said:

We here at customer support can only assist with issues related to the game itself. Since it is related to gameplay mechanics, we would suggest you to post this issue on our forums so that other players and game developer can help you with this.

So apparently the issue is "related to gameplay mechanics".
Fantastic.

This is what my game looks like too. I feel like I'm playing an adventure game on Windows 98 with these terrible shadows and colours.

I'm using an NVidia 315M - I know it's a mobile card but other modern games like TOR and Skyrim look perfectly fine on my computer so I'm sure it's not an issue with how good my hardware is.

Are we going to get something official about this, or do i have to keep juggling the DOF in order to play?

I hope they fix this thing soon.. it really gets on my neves to see the gradients of the effect turn down to 256 or less colors!

Besides disabling the DOF, which screws up all the lighting in every ambient, is there any real solution?

This issue happens to me with a GTX 570 aswell to a friend of mine with an ATi 6970

I have to say that Bioware's way of dealing with customer support is one of the most bizarre I have ever encountered. They seem to think that if they simply ignore the problem it will go away - apparently the issue doesn't even dignify a simple "We're aware of this problem".
The sticky in this forum says to get support from EA Help.
EA Help told me to get support from the forum.
What on earth am I supposed to do?

I had the same problem with ME 2. Although they had decentish fixes for that.

I have an Intel HD 3000 CPU, but it runs all my other games without problem.

Took me a long time to figure out what people were talking about. Looks like low bit color.
Looks better than in my game though. I had to disable DoF because it kept blurring things it shouldn't, and now there aren't any shadows.
Still have issues with people facing the wrong way or having their heads turn almost 180° though.

It's getting ridiculous that there is no response at all to this STILL. I'm gravely disappointed and will not buy future BioWare products.

I just don't understand how a company could decide to launch a game as massive as ME3 and then not provide any sort of tech support.
