I think everyone's on agreement that it was pretty atrocious, save a certain few biodrones who will shovel hate onto all forms of criticism.

Yes, ''Everyone thinks X''.

The standard response from all Hatedrones.

yeah that was a very stupid line

also "we don;'t need to think about strategy or tactics, this is about survival"

How the **** are you going to use strategy or tactics against DOZENS OF REAPERS?!

It's about survival. About getting as many people into some form of shelters as possible to hold out until something more long term can be put into effect...

Anderson knows the deal. He said it himself, he knows Humanity can't win regardless of how much of the ALliance they sacrifice to the grinder simply because of how gigantic the invasion is. So, survive until they do have a chance.

Some poeple just cannot fathom that there are times, when startegy or tactics are not going to change anything. Nor are they really viable.

Shepard is facing an enemy whom no one knows. Vigil said it himself, they are incomprehensible. They are older and more advanced. They are more powerful. They are not human in any sort of way. Any reference point is lost. You build strategy from your knowledge of the enemy. You plan ahead and predict next moves.

How do you do that when you have no friggin clue about the enemy? And Shepard is the one who knows the most about them, but even he/she doesn't know enough to formulate a plan, not in the blink of an eye anyway.

People cannot accept that this does not mean Shepard will not use tactics or strategy later.

Or people just like to hate.

I think it's the latter mostly.

Dude, cheesy dialogue is part of the mass effect experience. Just look at Jacob: without the priiiize, nobody would even remember he existed.

That was more sleazy than cheesy.

Now, Benezia on the the other hand....

OH NO DONT REMIND ME

She is definitely the worst VO in the entire franchise. I just had to turn the sound off every time she was on the screen. It was too bad.

Maybe he should have said that. Not to mention it's a strategy anyway.

Strategy would denote you have a chance to fight. You don't. The only thing you can do is survive. Nothing on the planet has a chance of bring down a Reaper except possibly a nuclear missile, and that's likely just going to have the affect of giving one an itch.

Still doesn't take away from the fact  that Shepard's line was awful.

If only Harbinger was even half the Reaper that Sovereign was :(

Mass Effect 1 and 2 had cheesy lines too but they weren't as bad as this, this is Michael Bay trailer material.

I hope this intro is just a cut down version and that the full game will have an expanded intro with more dialogue options.

No a strategy is just an overall plan of action. Bunkering down until something better can be figured out is a strategy.

I like cheese.
But I don't even remember ever hearing or reading anything that didn't make me cringe and gag.
I just got over it.

She literally had the worst lines in the entire franchise. Then they had Liara go and repeat them. So embarrassing.

God.

Shephard's strategy, tactics line made me wince. This is a war its all about strategy and tactics. Who would put that plonker in the demo in charge of anything? They better have got rid of the auto dialogue come the actual game and give us some choice.

Where was the statement about cheesy dialoge when ME1 used it.

I liked Shepards lines in front of the commitee, because it seemed like they were just going to treat the Reapers like a normal race invading instead of a race who were invadng because they knew they could win for the thousandth time over. They asked for tactics and Shepard just shot them down to try and get them to understand the gravity of what the Reapers were capable of.

Man.

You're standing in front of the Commanders of the human alliance. You know that the fate the galaxy may lie in their actions. They are visibly bricking it when they ask you what to do.

They are not asking for a detailed plan of action.

They weren't asking shepard to whip out little models and start planning a strategic campaign. They were asking for hope and for resolve. And they were asking the one person who just might be able to give it to them.

They were asking for "We few we lucky few", or at a pinch "We will not go quietly into the night". But this is a computer game and we've got to get a move on, there is shooting to do and exposition to dodge, so boil that down into one line and what you have is, well, "We fight or we die."

Doing  you bring your rational and clear logic in this thread to ranting and bemoaning a line  that makes sense given context of the situation... cause we all know with the Reapers raining down from the heavens there is plenty of time to have  a war strategy session.  :P

One man's cheese is another man's wine.

You are not always going to have great dialog. Some is bad and some is good and it varies by opinion. I personally thought the line was trying to be dynamic but failing somewhat. Better would have been we try to hold them off until we can get help from the council, because the whole galaxy is next. it doesn't have as much bravado though. It sounds more tactical though.

basically this. consider that the only thing resembling a weakness we know about the reapers at this point is that they rely on dividing and conquering.

Instead of cliché lines, what if Shepard would divulge what he knows of the Reapers--the effects of indoctrination, Vigil's comprehensive account of the Prothean extinction, and his conversations with Sovereign and Harbinger.

ummmm . . . they're fighting a war . . . . you don't win wars by hiding, you need strategy and tactics to win, wether they are hit-and-run tactics, guerilla style tactics, etc, etc, planning and organizing troops and resources is all part of strategy, determing where your troops are at and prioritizing targets and cities and nations as most vital, all part of strategy

if a bunch of Admirals don't know the basics of fighting a war, than Earth is in BIG trouble

all this matters when engaged in a war, the local populace might not care for this but as an organized, professional military, to say strategy and tactics don't matter, than you might as well just go "surrender"

S/he already did. The problem isn't the sentiment of the line, but the execution. There are a lot of ways for her/him to have expressed that idea without sounding like a complete plonker. You have to fight or you'll die? Fascinating, Shepard, tell me more.

Cheesy? No, not really. Especially not the "We fight or we die" line.

Now the strategy/tactics line was noteworthy in that it stated what sounded like a falsehood but could potentially be justified if only it were explained better.

As others have noted the rationale behind it is there (ie making a distinction between established military strategy and tactics and the only thing possible against the reapers) but the line itself isn't that clear.

A better one would have been:

"The Reapers are more advanced than us. They're more powerful. Nothing you learned about fighting a war applies to the Reapers. All we can do is fight or die."

^ pretty much this

there's so much s/he knows and s/he just says "we fight or we die", yeah . . . . real useful information, tells us exactly nothing (maybe we shouldn't have made you an officer if thats your plan)

the lines were cheesy no doubt, but people read too much into it. shepard said it himself, he's just a soldier.

and to be fair that reaper surprise attack cut the strategy debate short. he could have been trying to make them understand the gravity of the situation before laying down his suggested practical course of action and for all we know that reaper blowing up the building interrupted that.

Mass Effect has had cheesy lines all the way through people are just nitpicking about a new game. Shepard is like the king/queen of cheesy speeches such as the speech on the Normandy in ME1 or the speech before the Suicide Mission in ME2 it's just part of the charm.

And let's not forget Wrex's obsession with eating people "you're right they're actually going to let me eat you" or "they're fools you should eat them!" etc etc

It's goofy Sci Fi and it's fun.
