Hello, I downloaded the demo of Mass Effect 3 and it's -awesome- and I'm going to buy it; but, I've read that people are saying that people react differently to you and there's more characters featured in Mass Effect 3 if you've already finished the first two games. I have no problem with going out and buying the games, I'm just wondering if it makes a great difference if you play the first two.
Thanks.
Should I play Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 before I play Mass Effect 3?

Well if you don't care about story then no but if you want the best story then play ME1 and ME2 it will make the game much more fun and you will understand more of the things in the game

To enjoy ME3 you don't need to, but I would highly recommend trying ME1 and ME2 at least once each.
And there are plenty of us that can help you through both games.

Well, I read the stories of both games and I watched IGN's video of Mass Effect series that explains everything you "need" to know to play Mass Effect 3, like the story and such. But does playing the first two games give you any 'extras or additional dialogue options'?

For example you'd likely need ME1 to have a save file with Wrex surviving through all three games, unless we can choose that in ME3. And I hope the same for Kirrahe showing up.
Also, there are a other minor story-lines and certain details that should continue, we just have to wait and see which ones and to what extent, (and I've avoided the leaked stuff that came out some time ago, so I don't have many preconceptions of ME3 at this time).

Yes, you should.
This series have one of the most immersive storylines ever created in a videogame, it's totally worth it to live it firsthand.
Plus there are tons of variables that will be affected by your decisions: people will live or die (even major characters, squadmates and npcs both), you will be able to pick a love interest (trust me, it adds a lot to the immersion) etc etc.
Do it now before you will be too addicted to the new gameplay of the tirth.

I was in the same situation you are about 2 weeks ago. Mass effect 3 looked really good but i never played the others but heard they were good. I downloaded ME1 played through and was impossibly excited to play ME2, luckily for me it was out for 2 years so i got to play it immediately. ME3 can't come fast enough.
TL:DR
Playing ME1 and ME2 was one of the best decisions i've ever made in my video game career. Don't miss out.

They are not only fantastic games, but Mass Effect 3 is actually the third of a trilogy - that is, the third part of a story (rather than just a third story in the same setting). So, your character will 'recognise' a lot of characters that you've never seen as a player, as well as be blamed (or congratulated) for many events 'you' were never involved in and dno't understand the significance of.
It rather like hearing that the last third of a movie has great action and effects, with truly heartwarming moments and/or hilarious jokes... then deciding that is the only part of the movie you're going to watch. Without the context of the first two, yes... you can enjoy it... but you won't be enjoying it to its fullest because you're only skimming the surface and the significance if characters and events are lost on you.
I ordered the first two together when Mass Effect 2 came out a few years ago, though ME2 arrived a few days before. I started playing ME2 while waiting for the original and MAN - I evidently missed so much. 'Who is this Garrus? Or Tali? Am I supposed to know them? Why does Shepard hate Cerberus; I don't even know who they are' ..so on.
EDIT: Also, I know the article you are talking about. It does NOT tell you everything you need to know about the in-game universe.
It INSTEAD tells you everything you need to know that was in THE BOOKS, which not everyone has (things such as the origins for the Illusive Man, for example). Information in the games is expected to be known from playing them.

You don't *have* to, but I very strongly recommend you do. Not only are you expanding on the lore and why everything is happening, and setting up choices, but ME1+2 are both great games. You can log 100 or more hours into them both and be happy.

Nothing against you OP, but this is one of my main reasons for hating new Bioware.
Ever since ME2, they've been on this kick to prove to people that you don't have to play the first game (or second) to enjoy the experience. It's stupid and the story has suffered because of it. Don't try to make such a big deal about save imports and long term effects of decisions if you're going to go back on your word just to cater to the shooter crowd.

If you play it off fresh in ME3 you may not get the bonus's from ME1&2. You may miss extra faces that can be missed if not playing ME1&2. Best to understand of Mass effect is playing ME1 followed by ME2 to get the grasp of ME3.Wigglewiggleyea wrote...

You'll probably get a lot more out of ME3 and find it more fun if you have background from the first two, so I'd say yeah, it'd be a good idea to play 'em first.

If you dive into ME3 without the previous installments, you'd still love the game alas missing out quite a chunk of stuff, as the decisions made in those 2 will have impact in this installment - y'know, open up subquest and so forth
