I have Mattock X. Still prefer the Avenger.

Mattock would be better if it fired semi auto. The trigger spam plus weight hit makes it second to the starter weapon for me....even with its better dmg and insane accuracy. Istill get 20+ headshot matches with starter Rifle...

Avenger + Scope + Recoil Damper = beastly.
Mattock is great if you need tons of damage in a short time, but my finger gets tired from mashing after a while and I go back to Avenger.

Too bad it isn't possible to use a laser mod on a widow.

I have a Mattock X (and full weapon mods for every weapon, just got N7-120 woo), and I don't find it superior to the Phalanx X or Carnefex I (modded of course).  The phalanx seems much easier to put rounds on target repeatedly and consistently, and the damage is almost the same with the pistol having the extended barrel in the demo and the rifle not having it.  The only annoyance is that I lose the round capacity, but pistols reload rather quickly, so that's not a problem.

The Carnefex is only a half-comparison, since it's an analague to a heavier weapon like the Viper with the high accuracy, medium refire rate and low magazine size.  That said, it's still very lightweight for what it offers - effectively best in class accuracy and damage per shot is about as good as you're going to get from any rifle.  If shooting people in the head is your thing, then the Carnefex takes care of it just fine at short or long range.

Still, given the experience with how much a letdown the rifles are I often find myself using only a carnefex or a phalanx on more than half the classes I play.  Otherwise, it's going to be a shotgun or a sniper rifle... and I feel like I'm at the point where I don't even like the viper over the carnefex even for an infiltrator sniper build made for rapid head popping crowd control.  I generally infiltrate with the widow, anyways, so that's kind of a moot point.

I guess the point I am getting at here is that the ARs in the demo are pretty lame and lackluster, and I'm hoping there's at least one gun in the new lineup that really gets my attention.  I do loves me some designated marksman rifles.  Also, grenade launchers that presumably fill an otherwise unused assault rifle slot sound pretty damn fly.

The Phalanx is not OP. It is actually weaker than it's ME2 version. It used to be the Desert Eagle of Mass Effect. Now it is the .45 ACP of Mass Effect whereas the Carnifex has assumed the hand cannon role. It is the reliable middle ground of pistols now.

Try the Carnifex, I have the Carnifex I, with scop IV and barrel V i think, and it can one shot kill the regular troops on bronze, on silver they get down to one block of health. Wonder the damage it does when upgraded to X.

It's not weaker, low kick, high rate of fire pinpoint accuracy. It's different but feels stronger to me.

as an aside:
The .44 Desert Eagle is a shockingly terrible gun IRL, while the .45 ACP is considered to be great.

No it's the Carnifex. High damage, good rate of fire, accurate and a 6 shot clip. Good for killing Phantoms both at range and up close.

It's a real chore (I'm only up to level 3) but if you can get Carnifex up to level 5 you have 200% recharge on any class that takes the carry weight talent in their class passive.

The .44 Desert Eagle is a shockingly terrible gun IRL, while the .45 ACP is considered to be great.

I prefer my .50 AE Desert Eagle over my .45 IRL any day. I don't think it is a terrible gun. Also the Phalanx IS weaker. In ME 2 it could kill most unshielded enemies in 1 shot. 3 or 4 if they have shields or armor.

The Mattock is semi automatic. I think you mean "full automatic."

After unlocking carnifex, and getting phalanx X and mattock, avenger, scimitar, katana, viper, mantis, tempest, shuriken, locus. and predator to level 10. I must say i prefer carnifex with high caliber barrel and/or scope over any weapon. perfect balance of fire power and accuracy and fire rate. even on gold. i only use other weapons on some specialist classes. such as shotties with krogan soldier, or sniper rifles with salarian infiltrator. as on gold. your cooldowns are way more important than your weapons fire power, and carnifex still gives shotgun grade fire power in one accurate slug. Its a no brainer.

I unlocked the Mattock X yesterday. By far my favorite Assault Rifle to use.

try surviving with it on gold the power cooldown debuffs will really hurt you xD. well... depends on the class.

Been using Mattock X since day 2.

Beast of a gun. Still use Avenger X over it but only on Adepts

It does fire semi-auto, which is why you have to hit the button in order to keep firing, unlike the Avenger, where you hold and fire--thus making the Avenger an automatic.
