Are you sure it's compatible? I have a Logitech headset I thought might work for 360 and nothing happened either. I'm pretty sure you need specific kinds of headsets or something. I ordered a Microsoft for 360 off of Amazon.
It said it was a gaming headset. I figured it would work since I'm on PC.
What really sucks is I found a really sweet team of guys, and because I was still getting used to playing Krogan, And because I couldn't explain to them why I sucked, they booted me before I could switch characters. D:

Yeah, lol, sorry. Like I said, not sure why I assumed you were talking about a 360. Should have realized.
I guess it's just because I, in my infinite naivety on all matters online gaming, attempted to hook a Logitech headset into my Xbox 360 the other day. Of course it didn't work. >_<

Is it a USB headset? Mine has been kind of acting funny on the demo. I had to switch it from front to back USB ports to get it to work.
No USB. I have a plug for my headphones and a plug for my mic.
I tried playing, and pressing tab. I couldn't even hear my own voice in the game. How am I supposed to know if it's working?

You can ask the other guys to tell you if they can hear you. Also, if the headset has a switch for the mic, check to see if it's set to on instead of off.
Lol, yes, yes. It's switched on.
Should I be able to hear myself echo through my own headphones via the game?

Probably not. I was in a game where all of the in-game sound was duplicated because a guy was on open mic and probably had it too close to his speakers. If he had heard it, he probably would've switched it off. Probably.
