After having the game freeze up in the middle of a mission I now can't get past the main menu screen. When I press start on the first menu screen (where the image zooms in) instead of going the second menu screen where you load up your game it freezes on a blank black screen with no background sounds.
When my game initially froze it was while playing with disc 2. The above menu screen freezing happens when trying to start the game from disc 1 and 2. I haven't had any problem playing any other games.
Has anyone else had this issue?

This is exactly what I was getting when I corrupted my save.
Do a search here and on YouTube and you will find a guide on how to use a tool called Modio that will allow you to recover your save.
It's usually the Autosave file that is knackered.
Give it a go and report back.

It looks like the autosave and the last manually created save on the character I had been playing when the problem started were corrupted. However after moving that save file from the hdd I still can't get past that first menu screen to attempt to load a game or create a new one.

Back up your existing save and then proceed. It's likely to be the only way.
Look at it this way, at the moment you can't play with your current save at all...what have you got to lose?
Move your existing save file onto a USB and start a new game.
You can then inject your last functional save from your old save into the new container and you should be good to go...

Have you backed up and then deleted your existing save file??
If so and it still doesn't work then delete all the ME2 content from your XBox and try again.
The only thing that stops you getting to that menu is a duff save file.

It worked, the last manual save file and the autosave were kaput.
