Hey everyone! I'm new to the forums, but I've been a fan of Mass Effect for years now. I'll cut to the chase: I'm on my third playthrough of Mass Effect 2 as Paragon FemShep, and in ME1 I romanced Liara. However, because she wasn't really involved in ME2 - and she's gotten more stoic and cold - I'm not sure whether to stay faithful until Mass Effect 3, or to cheat on her with Garrus. Input would be cool because - Mass Effect-wise - I'm really stuck here! So, should FemShep stay faithful to Liara? Or cheat on her with Garrus? OR any other crewmember; it doesn't HAVE to be Garrus.

So, suggestions? ^_^

Do you have LOTSB? You'll have the opportunity to continue the relationship with Liara, and she is less cold/stoic at the end of the DLC :P

I was really disappointed by Garrus' romance, most of the time it felt like some casual fling. IMO it is the worst romance in the series. I think Thane has a better romance if you want to "cheat" on her, or Jacob if you don't mind the love scene.

Yeah, I do have that DLC, but even at the end I thought she was still too...cold? I mean, a nervous, socially-awkward and naive scientist wouldn't hunt down the Shadow Broker for revenge, but I guess rescuing Feron was a compassionate thing to do. I'm still not sure abou "cheating" on her, but I'll take your opinion of the Garrus/romance into account. And yeah, Thane and Jacob seem sound, despite Jacob being abit...eh, generic?

I agree with Riero3. The Garrus romance was... odd. It didn't seem like there was much going on between the characters. However, I've never been a huge fan of Garrus so maybe that had something to do with it. I suggest staying faithful. Liara will probably have a big part in ME3 as she is the only squadmate who cannot be killed. If you are going to cheat, you might want to do it with someone from ME1 because it looks like ME2 characters only have minor roles.

I think you should choose Kelly, she's a great character, even though she's minor, and her romance arc is way better written than some others.

I'm not sure why so many people think Garrus' romance was only a fling... Like the other romances, it's whatever Shepard wants it to be. But I guess ME3 will prove that on its own.

@OP: Do you roleplay your Shepard? If you do, just think about what's in-character for her. Does she no longer like the type of person Liara is becoming? Is Garrus more her type now? Is she the type who would cheat at all? (There is a funny line in LotSB if you do cheat on her with Garrus, I'll say that much.) Which one do you think she would feel closest to going into ME3? ...Or you could just flip a coin or something.

I agree, but I suspect that Kelly's role in me3 is just a cameo.

Actually, I thought her role in ME3 was better than ME2. (I've read the spoilers.)

I actually have the opposite perspective, because that one strikes me as what sex between a human and an intelligent alien might actually resemble: i.e., weird, awkward, and probably a bad idea of the "let us never speak of this again" variety. Also Garrus wasn't written around his "romance" subplot (unlike, say, Liara's entire species) which endears him to me somewhat.

Just make 2 playthroughs. One where you stay with Liara. The other where you get with Garrus.

Because that's exactly what it is. It's up to you whether or not you want to flesh it out in the next game.

This. Also, the Garrus romance isn't a fling. I don't know how you can think that unless you've only seen the first romance conversation.

Really? Because I've always liked Kelly :) But I would actually have to end it with Liara because Kelly is only available if your Shep isn't with anyone, I think? Can anyone clarify this? If you can "romance" Kelly whilst your with someone, then I'm definitely Team Kelly ^_^

I would do, but I probably wouldn't play through them both/all; I already have three on the go. And I get the points of everyone else about ME2 characters; most of them will probably - if not definitely - play cameo roles in the ME3 story, which sucks. Still, I'm stuck with the decision. Liara, Garrus or someone else?  I WOULD go Kelly if you could "cheat" on someone with her. :P

You can't be with any of the ME2 love interests, but Liara, Kaidan or Ashley's picture won't even go down if you choose to invite Kelly up.

I encourage the option of not tying Shepard to a single LI if you prefer not to.

A lot happened in two years, it's enough to change her. Don't expect her to be the same as she was in ME1.

I'd say go for Garrus, because it's clear you haven't realised or accepted that change and perhaps your Shepard should display that attitude? (And I mean that in a non-offensive way just to say...)

No, it's just an incredibly awkward set of events that lead to.... another awkward event. The romance is just dumb, and even Garrus knows that. He's just bored and decides to play along.

I think the Garrrus romance was a well done <friend to lover> relationship arc and that the awkwardness made sense in that way (proposing to your best friend tends to go like that). Anyway, its all a matter of taste.

As for the OP question, if you want to simply want to add a bit of drama in your Shep's life, I find it easier to go after Jacob with the intention of coming back with your ME1 relation. Thane and Garrus have much more baggage attached. Kelly might also be an endearing option if you prefer to play s/s.

If there's no chafing, you're not doing it right.
