I'm playing ME3 multiplayer since early access, and I must say - I like it very much. And the more I play the more I think it's not just a "coop". Gameplay looks more like a "5-men instance" of some next-gen MMORPG. "5 men instance" with interesting tasks, intelligent AI enemies and truly dynamic combat. Rewards are random, but each player gets what he can use by any of his characters (noone gets something useless).

"Instances" are actually 33% of any MMORPG out there. In some cases "instances" are even more then a half of a MMO (Guild Wars and Vindictus for example consist of instances only - there is no persistant world in such games).

What are other 66%? PvP and persistant world exploration (which ME3 doesn't have right now). But who knows what will we get in upcoming DLCs... I'm sure not some other parts of Shepard's story ending for single-player. There will be new multiplayer DLCs, and maybe we will see ME3 PvP "instances" some day... which means ME3 will become "66% complete MMORPG".

P.S. Before ME3 demo I waited some new MMOs (like TERA and Guild Wars 2) to play. And now I doubt I'll need any MMO in the future. ME3 multiplayer will replace all of them for me :)

I would be fine with a mass effect MMO, The genre needs more sci fi anyway, It shouldnt be like TOR though, i can only imagine that if i did actually play TOR, it would only get boring due to the rather stale breaded character/level system.

It doesnt need spoken dialogue but i can understand if they really want to do it, i just think it inflates the price of the game when it goes retail, as it did with TOR.
What Mass effect is about, is a massive universe and its just not getting the love it needs from a Hybrid RPG game, it should focus on exploration, miltiary combat (depending on how it would go), crime/law, the level system shouldnt be entirely "grind enemy for XP", there should be a system which is about researching new technologies, the skill tree can i suppose still be XP based, though its really up to Bioware how they would take it.

Yes, I played a lot of MMOs. That's why I'm saying ME3 multiplayer is not just a coop, and looks more like "5-men instance" from some next-gen MMORPG :)

MMOs need story, a setting. Not just a plot like in a typical game, but something broad.
That's a lot of work.

It took them almost 6 year for SWTOR? No? I think it was announced in 2006.

And even so, apart from the class story lines it doesnt really have much does it?

As an MMO it should also not try to jump on the generic quest system like - talk to A, kill Y amounts of B and bring back so much X. Those are sickening.

ME MMO with how ME3 multiplayer works could be awesome.
PvP would be unbalanced though.
Unless the game is posed as a very frantic fast paced power based shooter. Powers could make a lot of difference, but we have guns to suppress casters, there are mines to work against "go to" classes like vanguard and infiltrators. We also have grenades to fish people out of cover.
I think it would require coordination from all sides to truly enjoy PvP, whether you lose or win. Besides losing is part of the game...
So I don't think we should worry about balance. More like whether there is a way to counter act a certain set up, so people don't capitalize on something specific.

Bioware should...maybe try it in a 2-3 years.

I agree with corporal.
Not a MMO, but more along the lines of a coop 4 - 6 players. Huge sandbox, allow us to go separate ways, meet back, stay together, whatever... Just pure freedom (as long as the story is tight and focused) If not, then it's cool we can stay together and not separate to allow for a focused tight story.

But definitely no MMO.

While ME3 multiplayer looks more like "5-men instance" for me, I'm not comparing it to old outdated MMOs (like WoW) literally. I'm talking about the idia and how it feels:
 ---> Not too large map with some tasks to complete togather.
 ---> Developing and equiping/customizing your character(s).
 ---> Interesting combat mechanics.
 ---> Random rewards.
 ---> High replayability.

ME3 coop is pure "5-men instance" BUT with completely next-gen game mechanics (compared to all other MMOs):
 ---> The map is as good as in any next-gen shooter.
 ---> You can develop and equip/customize you character like in any RPG/MMORPG.
 ---> Cover-shooter (with slasher elements) plus RPG-stile active-abilities-using combat.
 ---> Random rewards with no useless items/unlocks.
 ---> High replayability.
 ---> ...i.e. truely looks and feels like a part of a MMORPG, rised to the all-new quality level (compared to all other MMOs).

A MMORPG is a free-roam multiplayer game on a large terrain. Traditional MMORPGs are often heralded as being the source of "Dungeon Levels".
ME3MP is a third-person shooter with upgradeable abilities. It has next to no RPG elements, and is too linear and combat-orientated to be anything close to a MMORPG.

Thats why I'm talking about ME3 coop like about a set of "5-men instances" (which are 33% of any MMORPG content).

And as I already saied: there are MMORPGs that consist only of instances. Guild Wars for example: there is no "large terrain" there... there is a set of instances. Traveling the world in GW = going from one instance to another (i.e. from one "coop map" to another "coop map"). There are many other MMOs that also consist of a "set of coop-maps" and have no persistant world to travel.

And not all MMOs are classic-fantasy-hotkey-bashers like WoW. Global Agenda, for example, is TPS (with some active abilities) MMO with no persistent world. There are many shooter MMOs actually.

That's the point though. You compared it to a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. What you just described fits the role of a MORPG instead. ME3MP isn't, at least currently, massive. It has two medium-sized maps, and that's currently it. If it had 15 maps, and a massive ultra-map the size of both Fire Bases (White and Ghost) combined, then maybe it would become a MMORPG. What it is currently, though, is closer to a cross between a MORPG and GoW3's Horde Mode.

As I saied, I compared ME3 coop to "5-men instances set", wich is 33% of any (even old) MMORPG content. To become 100% MMORPG, ME3 must have PvP instances set, and at least some non-combat instances where players can take some quests to complete in combat instances. There is no need in huge persistent world in MMO, but with it the MMO is better.

Global Agenda is MMO, Guild Wars is MMO, Vindictus is MMO, WoW is MMO, EVE is MMO. ME3 is 33% of MMO, but with PvP and non-combat instances (or persistant world) ME3 will become 100% MMO.

ME3 Multiplayer is definitely not 33% of an MMO, it isn't even 3% of an MMO just from a volume prospective. Just saying...

ME3 coop is about "special forces" and it will not ruin the story and gameplay. Add to this PvP instances (Alliance vs Cerberus, or Reapers vs All Others) and it will not ruin the story and gameplay. Add to this non-combat instances where hundreds of players can take quests (to comptete them in combat instances later) and it will not ruin the story and gameplay... After this ME3 will be 100% MMORPG without any harm done to the story and gameplay.

In order to have a bunch of players on one server, the gameplay has to suffer. Special forces is a different mode, MMOs have no game modes. IMO there's no comparison between an RPG game and an MMO. The whole reason I play RPGs is for the story, and the character progression. Having a bunch of people on a server kind of makes it feel like you have no importance in that world anymore, the quests are repetitive "Go here and do this, then come back." It's just a rush to end game content, which is a way to waste hours on end for pieces of gear that become obselete in a few months. The way those devs make money is by the subscriptions, so their focus is ways to keep you playing for as long they can, while other games just make sure the game is considered fun so their next one will be a success as well. MMOs are like a virtual Skinner's box, you feel this urge to NEED to play because the rewards are so random, but come so often, that it creates this sense of achievement. Along with feeling you have to play because your guild is progressing faster than you are. In my opinion MMORPGs are more of an escape from the real world for people who might not feel like they're accomplishing much in the real world, than a video game. You can actually beat a video game, and the story concludes. There is no main storyline in an MMO. I'm sorry if I offended you, that is not what I meant to do. I just have a huge dislike for those games. I used to play one a lot a couple of years ago, when I was in a slump in my life. When I came back to it, things were going better. I realized I wasn't even having fun, I was only playing it to feel like I was worth something. That wasn't just my issue either, because the gameplay in an MMORPG makes it obvious that there's a reason for playing them besides "fun", because fun sure as hell isn't in the equation.
