Yes, I played a lot of MMOs. That's why I'm saying ME3 multiplayer is not just a coop, and looks more like "5-men instance" from some next-gen MMORPG :)

You obviously don't know what you are talking about, this would be the same as saying **** Zombies in COD:WaW is an instance and thus COD is 33% MMO...

Battlefield 3 is also 33% of a MMO. Add more PvE instances and non-combat instances with quest-givers, and Battlefield 3 will become a FPS MMO like Dust 514 or Planetside :)

Having a MP component doesn't make a game an MMO. Online gaming was around long before that excuse for a video game genre was lol.

In order to have a bunch of players on one server, the gameplay has to suffer. Special forces is a different mode, MMOs have no game modes. IMO there's no comparison between an RPG game and an MMO. The whole reason I play RPGs is for the story, and the character progression. Having a bunch of people on a server kind of makes it feel like you have no importance in that world anymore, the quests are repetitive "Go here and do this, then come back." It's just a rush to end game content, which is a way to waste hours on end for pieces of gear that become obselete in a few months. The way those devs make money is by the subscriptions, so their focus is ways to keep you playing for as long they can, while other games just make sure the game is considered fun so their next one will be a success as well. MMOs are like a virtual Skinner's box, you feel this urge to NEED to play because the rewards are so random, but come so often, that it creates this sense of achievement. Along with feeling you have to play because your guild is progressing faster than you are. In my opinion MMORPGs are more of an escape from the real world for people who might not feel like they're accomplishing much in the real world, than a video game. You can actually beat a video game, and the story concludes. There is no main storyline in an MMO. I'm sorry if I offended you, that is not what I meant to do. I just have a huge dislike for those games. I used to play one a lot a couple of years ago, when I was in a slump in my life. When I came back to it, things were going better. I realized I wasn't even having fun, I was only playing it to feel like I was worth something. That wasn't just my issue either, because the gameplay in an MMORPG makes it obvious that there's a reason for playing them besides "fun", because fun sure as hell isn't in the equation.

You are talking about classic old-school MMOs. MMO market stagnated for a long time, but not long ago It started to move forward becouse of new slasher-MMOs, space-combat-sim-MMOs, and shooter-MMOs. MMORPGs started to change, becoming less "real-life-killing-grinders" and more like non-MMO games with advanced multiplayer. These MMOs called "next-gen-MMOs", and ME MMORPG could be one of them :)

But it does :)

-Guild Wars.
-Vindictus.
-Black Prophecy.
-Planetside.
-Global Agenda.

... all of them are MMOs, despite they look more like usual games with advanced multiplayer. At least developers and players call them MMOs :)

But if you want to call MMOs literally... Then you will be surprised that there is only one true MMO game right now: EVE Online. No other MMO is that massive, social, persistent, and hardcore :)

As long as MMOs are subscription based, they're going to be made to have people playing for a long time, instead of for fun. There's no loophole around it either. MMOs take a lot more money to make, and they are always expanding their game. They need that subscription money to do so.

Not all MMOs are subscription-based (again, Guild Wars for example: no fee, and no "free-to-play-model" - buy a game and play as much as you want as if it was an offline game). And not all MMOs have a lot of content. Well, and not all MMOs were made by large development teams. And still there are some good MMOs among them.

OP doesn't know what an MMO is or how much different they are compared to a standard FPS with multiplayer.

By your logic, you could say Super Mario is 33% of an MMO because it's like a person in an instance, fighting off enemies and trying to reach the end. Portal is also an MMO because if you add quests, factions, and other players, it qualifies.

It would ruin the story, and gameplay though

What "story" is there to ruin? Do you mean the setting? That is entirely in the hands of the developer and how much they wanted to compromise between consistency and a perceived urge to pander to current MMOs' main target audience.
For what it's worth, some may argue that DA2 was "ruined" by certain changes in design (arguably also done in order to appeal to a different target demographic than its predecessor), and that title wasn't an MMO. You will have this risk looming above any title.

Some people say you can't do screen adaptions that do its novel origin justice.
Some people say you can't do computer games that do a movie justice.
Some people say you can't do MMOs that do RPGs justice.
etc.

I think all of this is possible, it just depends on the guidelines and limitations established by whoever makes it, and their determination to stick to them. Designers "just" need to get away from the idée fixe of pandering to the "lowest common denominator", as that is what gives the MMO genre a bad name these days.

For what it's worth, I have a feeling that three out of four posters against the idea of an ME-MMO were also fervently opposing multiplayer in the form it is being implemented into ME3 right now, only to be recently proven that it can be fun after all.

That being said, with Bioware just having released another sci-fi MMO, I don't see this happening anytime soon. Maybe in a few years. In the meantime, I would enjoy what we are seeing in the demo right now being expanded upon. Co-op campaign DLCs, anyone?

Intelligent AI... Monster Hunter for PS2 (which came out in 2001 I think) had intelligent AI. This AI is smart enough to do tactical things, but it admittedly is confused easily. If you get too close to a sniper, they run around aimlessly latching onto pieces of cover and then running off again. Still, does smart things every so often, like flanking, so it's smarter than about 50% of the community.

No MMOs...ever for Mass Effect.

I remember when a KOTOR3 was announced in a very old OXM ('07 I think) and I was excited, then many years later heard about TOR and thought, "OK, this will still be good" and then heard it is an MMO and immediately was disappointed.

I have never liked a MMOs plot since it really doesn’t have one
since everyone in that game world is doing the exact same thing in your same position.
A good Co-Op would be great and then also having those other people be your
squadmates and you would be the main character but a MMO would be awful.

The Multiplayer in ME3 is not a MMO. It is a survival mode, nothing more.

No ME MMO pls.

Plus: an MMO needs PvP. I don't think ME abilities can be ever balanced for PvP.

PvP? If you aren't an Asari Adept, you're dead. Wouldn't be fun. Maybe if there was no abilities, everyone's the same, just different guns/mods.

Behold! A "SUPER-M-M-M-MARIO MMO"!
Oh... and some FPS MMO:
...MMO is not a genre. MMO can be any genre, even 2D arcade Image IPB

No, an MMO doesn't "need" PvP. Just as Mass Effect's current multiplayer mode doesn't "need" PvP, as much as some people claim that.

Although it would be possible. ME biotics are basically Star Wars force powers with a fancy blue light, and TOR has no problem whatsoever with its PvP modes. It's not like your abilities are already affecting NPC enemies differently depending on their class, it'd be similar for human players.

Also: omigawd, they're making Planetside 2?

Here's another "shooter MMO" example, by the way: Tabula Rasa

Anyone here heard of FireFall? It's a third person shooter/mmo cross. It sounds really interesting, and looking at the ME3 co-op, something in a similar fashion could be made.

Not saying mmo's are good, or bad, or ME series should move into a co-op only or multiplayer universe.. but reading the majority of posts, people seem to be "mmo yes!" or "mmo no".

Open your minds, there can be more to an mmo than WoW or TOR, or any of those stats games.

Aye, there have been so many different mmo's over the years covering all genred and approaches - people need to look past the biggest, most popular names. It's like saying all anime is like "Pokemon", or all Hollywood movies are like "Transformers".

Although I have to admit, I would like the social component of a fictional ME MMO (-> player interaction in-between combat) to be somewhat similar to WoW or TOR - simply because it's a proven concept that already worked before those games (but I suppose few people here know how Ultima Online plays).

Maybe like in Fallen Earth - that one was a "shooter" MMORPG as well, and you could switch between 3rd person and FPS view depending on whether you just wanted to explore or hang out with other players ... or if you wanted to fight.

if they manage to keep the mass effect gameplay and looks as we know them intact id be all for a mmo. but we all know how mmo's turn out. before you know it theres krogans running around wearing pink hellokitty shoulderpads and a purple pimp hat.

however it could be quite good aswell. imagen the citadel as the main social/trade hub for all races. having the wards actually filled with players walking about instead of static npc's that are glued to the ground

...I wander how many people still think that MMO always = 15$ per-month-fee + a lot of grind.

Not all MMOs are like that. I'm sure BioWare will be able to make "buy-to-play" (i.e. without fee: buy original game and optional DLCs and play as much as you want) ME MMO based on ME3 coop.

MMO development is not restricted to PC only, by the way. There are console MMOs.
