RIP PC gaming

People have been saying this for 10 years and its all been BS for the most part, but Origin is actually the first thing to truly threaten it because now if other big publishers get the same idea as EA, soon we might have not just Steam and Origin but a seperate client for every dang publisher.

EA dumped Steam due to crap going on over DLC delivery or something and what not. Then again, EA is also the only one having this problem with Steam. All this when Origin was announced and released.

It ain't obvious or something.

EA didn't dump Steam, they still release games on the platform.  The issue is with the TOS in place which they feel conflicts with how there business model is run.  So games that don't have DLC will still show up on Steam (Alice: Madness Returns, Sims, Shank series, etx)

I've always loved Bethesda for their pro modding stance to their games. BW used to be the same way with some of their games (NWN comes to mind).

Tbh, I saw this coming. I bought DA:O and DA2 for PC in order to use mods. It looks like those are the last two moddable Bioware games.

THAT'S a big shame, In 2009, Bioware created a toolset for fans to use in order to make mods to their heart's intent. In 2012, they create Origin, the official discouragement and end of modding. =/

Its all about the quantity and the money now. Giving a crap about the quality or the consumer has dropped off for EA

According to dmex (EA developer), he was certain that Origin would not affect mods... He's also working on an Open Source version of Origin. You could PM dmex on this forum or on EA's forum.

I'll try to locate the post where he mentions Origin being able to work with mods.

Razer 1911 will fix this like they did with BF3 where you can play online without origin as long as you have legal game

Why would it block it? The ME3 exe is still there. Pop the exe into Texmod, pick what mods you want, hit launch. The ME3 exe will start, which will then start Origin, and then boot up. I don't see why Origin would keep texmod from working.

It does work.

Instructions as originally posted by krayzi here

1. Copy your Texmod exe into the folder where your MassEffect3Demo.exe is located
2. Rename your Texmod exe into MassEffect3Demo and the MassEffect3Demo into whatever name you please
3. Start Origin and click onto the Demo
4. Now it should load the Texmod exe
5. After that go back to your folder and change the name of your Texmod exe and Demo exe
6. Now go back to Texmod and browse the demo exe and run it

Dmex might have been talking about the Coalesced which if the same as the demo is still moddable, though with a few more steps than 2. But so far TexMod doesn't work.

Hopefully, I know for a fact i'm not comfortable with Origin rummaging through my hard drive and registery. It even added dead space 2 to my games list.... after discovering it in my steam installation.

Just not comfortable with it when I dont know what its up to =/

I just sent him a PM from the EA forum with this link to see if he'd take a look.

I do recall someone asking him IIRC about running mods with Origin though. I'll keep searching and see if I can find the reference, in case it was someone else.

Texmod does work though, I've used it plenty of times. The method RainyDayLover just posted works fine for me.

So if that fixes it, the OP can change the title to reflect that it works now.

Well that is nice to hear, after seeing this thread I tried loading TexMod the normal way and it would take me to the demo but not let me search and pull any files. Thanks for the info RainyDayLover

its more alive then ever

the problem is only with over hyped brand games where developers intentionaly block modding to sell DLCs

Thx for the trick but see what we have to do to get it work !!!

I think that i'm gonna get a crack after buying the game so i won't have to use origin for the solo part.

Lol... what? Last I checked modding actually received a boost because of what Valve thought of with Skyrim. Something with a steam workshop that lets modders upload mods into it and then others can use it to quickly and easily install those mods? Don't know the details, been avoiding forums and gaming news sites for a while now.

Sorry but if modding is dying then it's because of crap companies like EA who can't think of other ways to stop cheaters in coop/multiplayer games.

Valve and Besthesda have allways supporting the modding, releasing a SDK "software developpement kit" for the modders, Valve giving the hammer tool to create maps for Half-Life, CS, TFC etc....

Giving the possibility to people to mod a game is giving longevity to a game but some distrubutors prefer short life game and get new game out to sell 8-(

For the cheat you can get people banned but you can't do nothing against the cheats, a cheat is out some time after it get detected but the next week a new version of that is out and undectable till it become detected by anti-cheat and the circle continue.

I have a bit of newbie question here, but - if you used modified textures and then go online, how the hell is the game supposed to work for those who don't have them? Sure, you can probably turn your Asari Vanguard into a Smurf, it's fine. But how will my computer, which doesn't have the Asarii-Smurf texture pack, know what to display? I thought that most of the textures are needed for SP anyhow, so they are just loaded from their respective Single Player files to speed up loading times.
I know that this is more of a general modding question, but I think it even applies here. Of course, that may be why MultiPlayer DLC's won't be that much of a thing, it would be hard to distribute patches that would allow players to passively see the DLC content. Unless I am completely wrong in how this works.

You've almost got the right idea - in things like CounterStrike: Source, or deathmatch games like that, private servers etc., they will have specific server-side files (like models, textures etc) that you have to download before you can see them, or hear audio, all that sort of stuff.

What Texmod does is different - all it's doing is changing your own client by telling a specific texture to be replaced with what Texmod says. This happens outside of the server; other people would see your character normally, but you'll see the retextured version.

It'd be like if you could wear a pair of glasses (i.e. Texmod) that made every dog bright pink in colour - everyone else would see normal dogs, but you'd see all of them bright pink until you took the glasses off. The actual dogs' true colours remain unchanged.

If that made no sense, just nod and smile. :)

You guys do realize that Mass Effect is built by Unreal Engine 3 and UE 3 was never designed to be mod-friendly. Dragon Age uses a proprietary engine designed by BioWare themselves that gives them more control on how modding goes. Therefore it is no surprise to me that Mass Effect was never really a moddable game to begin with.

TexMod is not that great and it doesn't work well at all with ATI/AMD Radeon cards so before you said modding is dead and all, you should blame the use of Unreal Engine 3. It is more of a game engine constraint above all else.

However, Origin still sucks in many ways that I will agree.

This. I bought Dead Space 2 and Kingdoms of Amalur on Steam and they show up on Origin.

However, I did log into KoA with my EA account login information, but I never did that with DS2.
