If you've noticed, any time the Reapers speak in books or in game they always have an interest in Humanity, offering to perfect them and allow them to become immortal, to give them a purpose. They talk about the cycle and how it's happened before, how it's inevitable. But for some reason I feel like they are slaves to it. They don't have the free will that other life forms have and they'll never know. It feels like they ae being controlled by something else. Is it just me??

At the dialogue near the end of Retribution they have a conversation with Kahlee, they don't want to get angy at her, they really do want to give her their side of the story. They want her to understand where they are coming from. Maybe it's just me but I feel there is something that we dont know about the Reapers that I hope we'll find out about in ME:3.

Discuss? :D

Really? It's probably just me. But they don't seem evil. Not intentionally, it doesn't seem like they want to do it for personal reasons.

They shouldn't. They're a galactic extinction threat, operating on a level far beyond our petty notions of morality. They are beyond good and evil.

They really are analagous to entities like Galactus from Marvel. Even more so the Ultimate incarnation Gah Lak Tus.

They're things, they don't warrant sympathy.

Sometimes, if I really think about what they're trying to do, they seem kind of like tragic heroes attempting to save the universe in their own way. I respect them for doing it so very efficiently these last few cycles.

Oh dear, Reaper sympathizers. Admiral Anderson would disapprove of this thread. ;)

Yeah, I mean sure they murdered at least one of my friends, melted my crew and set their henchmen to kill me dozens of times (and one that succeeded) and committed genocide countless times (and feel no guilt over it) but really all Harbinger needs is a big hug.

That, and as many bullets as I can mass effect into him.

I'm gonna squash him like a bug, EAT his friends and family and drive his people back into dark space.

The survivors will tell stories about the Shepard monster to their little Reaper children.

And then I'll feel bad for him.

Sorry?

Not really.

I don't hate them either. They're just following their programming for good or ill.

I've always hoped we'll find out who the people were who 'transcended' to become the reapers.

(It's difficult to find proper threads in this part of the forums given all the spam...)

I don't see humans being massively melted down and used as material to build another one of them as perfection. It's no different or better than being made into a husk.

Also when you see a little boy get into a shuttle hoping for safety, only for it to be shot down by a Reaper's energy cannon ten seconds later, you don't any sympathy for them.

The reapers killed you squad. They killed millions of people, simply to add one to their race. They killed that little boy in the demo, need I say more?

Devil's advocate here, but people are easily led into paths where they believe that what they are doing is the ultimate good (if you want examples, I will supply them, but I think that you guys can figure it out). Those are people, fickle and emotional creatures, these are machines, fully capable of thought processing, but machines nonetheless. So tell me what would make them find what they do every now and then a travesty? Whenever ants come into some ones house they are methodically killed, then they do it again and are killed again. But the Reaper, once again in their eyes, offer not simply death to organics but the chance to become immortal as they are. Now comes in the fanaticism part. They purge life but feel no wrong for it. Why should they? They have done it before and know that they will do it agian. It is a part of THEIR lives, and has been for eons. The trillions of years that they have been around, make any losses that they incure on organics seem very very slight. As a human being, it is inate to become angry at the merciless slaughter of innocents or non-combatants, but for anyone to actually understand where the Reapers are coming from (no I don't mean dark space) you need to drop your ideas of organic morality and try to comprehend what they really do and why they do it. To actually address the question, no my Shepard (and myself in turn) feel no sympathy towards them. They are... bringing in the Cain to kill a husk. There is no way on earth... um, in the milky way, that this fight is balanced or fair. So in the hopes of continued existance, sympathy is not possible. So no sympathy, but I might just be able to understand them a little bit better.

All of this leads to the way that they seem really arrogant, with the whole "You are as dust struggling against a cosmic wind" thing, but it is true.  No one has ever succeeded in stopping them for the, how many times that they have done this?
Just my thoughts on what their thoughts might be.

Sure, they melt us into gray goo, but in their experience that's a *good* thing a la Greg Bear's Blood Music. They want to Uplift us into Reapers.

Unfortunately for them, my Shepard doesn't want any of their Kool Aid.

I am sorry for the fact that they were transformed from sinister ancient machines into childish creatures with personality issues.

The kid was an idiot. "You can't help me." I wish we had an option to reach in, pull him, knowck him out and keep tossing hims around with us.

He also may not have been real.
