Step Three: It’s Not Kill-Stealing, It’s Kill-Helping

At some point, you will be good enough to be concerned about the fact
that you had finally gotten that sniper’s shields down and were about
to unload a Warp bomb of epic proportions only to have your friend
charge in and shotgun them to death before zipping off to a few assault
troopers that will be dead by the time you reach them.

For right now, just say “Thank you,” and move along.'

We vanguards don't have to justify what we do lol. We just have to do our job well and stay alive while doing it. If somewhat has a problem with the vanguard it's his issue, not ours. I've frankly have just as many rage stories of people leaving the game because I "take away" too many kills and that they "never" see any action, or people not backing up what I did because they're too scared or "safe". If I didn't have a team to back up what I did the risk that I took would be enormous. That's what I talked about in my post earlier: I'm just glad we got the job done. Next time any of you complain about vanguards or kill stealing, remember: YOU'RE SPECIAL FORCES! Your job is the mission, not the kills lol

I personally love playing a Vanguard, and with my friends I am well-known for jumping around the map as much as possible, through the line they were holding, charging into enemies which people have been spending ages to get down. And I am also known for charging away from everyone to where the enemy has spawned and killing everything. Over-powered? No, not really.

I have also been playing an Engineer (Quarian) and I can do exactly what I do on the Vanguard. I can take out large groups of enemies with Incinerate and the Turret alone. The turret being well-known for tagging enemies and getting the final shot.

What about Infiltrators? When I play one of those I can snipe an enemy which is in cover with one shot. An enemy which my friend has spent time getting his shields down?
There are a lot of times and opportunities at which anyone can just come along and take the killing blow? Is this bad? No. Because when I see +780 Assist I know that I have gained the majority of the points and they would only possibly get +100 for taking the killing blow.

I play as a vanguard, well mostly until I unlocked more races in other classes, but found that I don't care about steals anymore. In the long run it seems like the number of kills isn't as important as assisting others.

Obviously, you're not a team player. You let your friend die, so that you can get kills more than him? Really?! You're no better than him then.

I killsteal all the time, but at least I don't complain when someone else takes "my" kills either. It's also fun when someone tries to "steal", but you get the killcredit istead because they comboed of YOUR tech or biotic skill.

One player was doing a lot of damage,
One player watched his ally die instead of helping, because he wanted more kills for himself.

I know which one I would rather play with.

Given the hectic, and on Gold, desperate nature of combat, what does 'stealing' a kill even mean?

In Firehouse Red, on Silver, the combat can become so violent, and the waves so overwhelming towards the end, with Guardians and Troopers coming from literally every direction as we try to hold onto a single data point, it becomes hard to even keep track of my teammates let alone keeping track of which particular enemy they are aiming at.

"Kill Stealing" just doesn't exist in certain situations.

Sounds like the actual selfish douche on the team is you, not your teammate.

I play a vanguard myself. You know why I charge cross-map and kill those low health enemies that my teammates could very well kill on their own a couple of seconds? Because their own shields or health might be low. There might be multiple enemies engaging them at once. They could be next to an objective like a computer we have to hack or something. Or maybe I just like flying across the map and ramming things. That's the whole point of the vanguard. It's a class about mobility, causing chaos, and quickly eliminating the common front-line soldiers like assault troopers and centurions so that the rest of the team can focus on the bigger threats like phantoms, turrets, and atlases.

If this is the demeanor people will have with this game, I'm starting to wonder if co-op was a good idea.

Are you serious? Like, for real?

This is not the game for you to go "MAI KILLS MAI KILLS FFFUUUU." The objective of this game is surivival and cooperation. As a Vanguard myself, I've never gone after a teammate's target for the pure pettiness of getting the kill, nor should that ever be the mindset of any player in any class. In fact, when I'm charging in, I like to think I'm helping them by knocking the target onto the ground, giving them a sitting duck to shoot at, or maybe even getting them out of a rough spot. If I get the kill, neat, let's move on. If I don't and they get the kill, great! Let's move on.

If this game were purely about who gets to rack up the most kills, skills like Singularity and Pull would never be used, because they're prime set-up abilities. Adepts would just run to desolate corners of the map to make sure nobody takes advantage of them. Engineers would let a turret power through their teammates so they could take it down without interruptions, Krogan/Vanguards would allow Phantoms to curbstomp their teammates so they could solo them without hassle - there would be no cooperative spirit at all. That kind of competitiveness isn't the right tone for ME3 MP.

Seriously, I don't usually say this, but you're playing the game wrong.

I love my vanguard to death, but I have to agree in that it is probably the single worst class to play with friends around. I can't do bronze missions with her anymore because it's impossible to use charge and nova without being a kill hog. And plenty of times I found that without thinking I charge an enemy a friend is about to finish off.
I have about a hundred times more fun on my vanguard, but the fun really gets sucked out of the matches when you're feeling like a jerk for taking all the kills. Yeah.. I've switched to silver matches, but thus far the risky playstyle has done little but get me killed... I'd like to find a happy balance, but as of right now I completely understand where you're coming from, and from those of us that truly weren't thinking when we charged, I apologize.

There is no such thing as kill-stealing. If you and a friend are attacked by a mugger, and you both pull a gun on the mugger but your friend shoots him first, you're not going to complain because you wanted to shoot him.

I play almost exclusively as an Adept. 80% of the time, I get an assist with the majority of the points. And I'm happy with that. Hell, I'm happy with a minority of the points. We all get the same experience in the end, and we all have more fun if we cooperate instead of worrying about who gets the kill. Plus, those assist trophies mean even more xp.

OP, it sounds like you're the real jerk in this situation. The vanguard player was just having fun using his class's abilities to the fullest. You, on the other hand, decided that a slightly different screen pop-up gave you free reign to ruin everyone else's good time by abandoning your team. I suggest you play private matches by yourself from now on, as that's the only place that kind of attitude is welcome.

mmm Vanguards are funny to watch kind of like the squirrel Hammy on Over the Hedge, all doped up on crack zippy around every where like a kid with ADHD. I like my Krogan Soldier shooting everything with my AR and Shotty, meleeing little phantoms and soldiers to the moon and laughing while I'm doing it. I am happy to have a Vanguard has a teammate because with all their running around I know where the main action is at and get to clean up the leftovers for my assist points and still end up on top of the leader board in points.

So you haven't been playing with the right Vanguard. My high lvl Nova+Charge build is immortal basically. I can solo Atlas, kill a bunch of Phantom without much hassle. I net 60 kills on average a match and I never die, while i run around saving Infiltrator who forget to cloak.

Get the right vanguard friend and your silver run suddenly becomes 50% easier.

good luck playing with randoms though, or a bad friend who steal all the kills. Good friends don't bother with kill stealing, it's all about Objectives and money.

Seriously. Best advice: Get Over It. It's a damn co-op game, the entire point is to survive, not rack up the most points. Honestly, the entire scenario OP descriped made him look like the ass not the Vanguard.

The only thing worth being irritated over kill-wise is when someone wastes a rocket after you explicitly stated ahead of time you had the Atlas under control, whether using a rocket or not.

But that's not kill stealing. That's just either inattention or stupidity that leads to a waste of valuable resources on higher difficulties.

As stated before, there is no kill stealing. You are working together to meet a common end. When everyone is getting shot up (particularly Vanguards), no one is going to be all pompous and considerate about if you're trying to kill an enemy or not. That's why K.D. ratios aren't being kept, and that's why the points are appropriated in line with who did what amount of damage.

If only there was some way for you to get all the kills yourself... like playing single player. Hopefully they implement some form of method of not being forced to play co-op with other people, kind of like that game they have at ****** barrels where you can remove the pegs and re-insert them in various ways until you 'win'.

The only problem with that though, is that there are inevitably other people who try and offer their patronizing suggestions as to how you should place the aforementioned pegs. This begs another question: why wouldn't those silly random people, or in this situation perhaps you even invited them, realize that you want to complete this on your own?

A fair question, no doubt. It is said in literature that no grouping of islands is a man. And that's for a good reason. No one wants to have their entire life be dictated by the aid and contribution of others. Could you imagine being a person subject to the dictates of sandy beaches, tropical climate, beautiful flora and fauna and... God forbid... tourists?

Speaking of tourists, why don't other people make vacation spots for people to go to by themselves. That'd be really cool. Kind of like that whole 'solitude' idea they have going in prisons, they could do that for vacations. So that way, you wouldn't have to pass the inevitable shuckster or wanna-be musician soliciting you with their harpy screeching or their terrible 2 note music attempts.

Nobody wants that. In short, what we can gather from my response, much as what we can gather from your original post, is that I have now given the same amount of valuable insights that you have.

If someone whines about something like that...then i'll purposefully go and kill everything they target just because they annoyed me. Movement and charging are life for a vanguard, get over it.

Not only do kills not matter, POINTS don't matter. Everyone gets the same amount of points.

The ADD vanguard who swoops in trying to solo everything and having to be saved constantly gets the same amount of points as the level 1 noob who spend 3 rounds AFK while he was eating a burrito and spent the rest of the game trying to figure out how to invert his controls.

Think about that next time you brag about your point totals :D
