I'm sticking to my Asari Adept now, but I have played the Human Vanguard until L16 or so and it has worked out quite nicely. The "problem" I think is that even Vanguards need to work with and stay close to the team - in essence, think of it as some kind of distance threshold within which you can charge. If you move too far away from the team, however, they are unable to support or even revive you, should you die.
And don't give me this "then just don't revive me" excuse. Even a Vanguard not charging at all but simply sticking back shooting his rifle is better than a Vanguard that managed to get himself killed by a swarm of enemies 30 meters away from his team. For a good squad, it goes without question that anyone who goes down can expect a revive, both because the 4th guy may actually be needed to survive the wave as well as because this is what teamplay is about.
Tl;dr: There's two kinds of Vanguards around. Those who work with their team, support it (crowd dispersion/AoE) and get supported (backup and revives) ... and those notorious lone wolves who charge headlong into some enemy group on the other side of the map, resulting in the map essentially being played by 3 players instead of 4. Needless to say, you can forget about playing on Silver with the latter and even on Bronze I've seen teams getting wiped due to the urge to revive one anyways even when he's surrounded by enemies. Which is where I think the "hate" seems to come from.
I'm regularly playing in a group consisting of 1 Vanguard, 1 Adept and 2 Infiltrators and it works like a charm if everybody sticks with the team.
