I play as a Soldier in MP and while Vanguards aren't terrible they definitely aren't one of my preferred teammates.

Vanguard PROS:

They're speedy so they can rush in and save your ass.
They draw a lot of heat.

Vanguard CONS:

They're speedy so they're constantly cherrypicking my kills.
They tend to get themselves killed somewhere on the other side of the map.
They don't have any tools for dealing with enemies that give my class trouble (Guardians and Turrets).

Guardians are easily disposed of with Shockwave + Headshot.

This is why people hate vanguards. A good number of them seem to think that having a higher score makes them a better player.

Your rank is determined by your total character levels and all exp and credits are shared, so teamwork is the best work (and only way to survive on Gold).

lol, people who complain that vanguards die as soon as they charge are playing with bad vanguards.
People who complain about kill stealing are obviously playing the wrong game.
Not bragging or anything like that but I hardly ever die when I charge, and im sure people who know how to play the class rarely die too.

But but so many vanguards die alone at wave 2!!!

All classes are overpowered in the right hands, if you are one of those players that used the tactical pause 100% of the time in ME2 or 1, then you are likely to struggle a lot more than those that didn't.

Once I found the glory of mapping power hotkeys to my gaming mouse, the entire game changed for me.  I can't use the pause window much anymore.

Hmm, ... not so sure myself. But one thing should have been memorable. The last enemy of a wave was a Nemesis sniper and everyone charged more or less simultaniously at it and then fired off Nova, it was like a Vanguard saturation bombing ... sure should have been memorable enough. DId something like this happen in your match?

So true. I'm a Vanguard that doesn't abuse Nova quite as much as others do, admittedly (though, reading these comments, maybe I should sink my last two levels into maxing it out as well...), but I do love having that maxed out Shockwave. I can wipe multiple Guardians with either my shockgun or pistol with Shockwave at my disposal, and the fact that it stuns the Atlus too means that I can take an Atlus by myself, if the situation calls for it (as long as my other buddies are keeping the other mobs away from me).

I remember when I first started playing with a couple of my friends. We were all starting out in the MP at the same time, so they were really shocked and a little upset when I started charging all over the map. Admittedly, I was a little reckless, and died my fair share, though I was more careful than a lot of Vanguards I've seen. I tried to stay as close to my party as I could without sacrificing the awesomeness of my Charge.

Then we discovered that Charge had a Biotic Explosion effect. And that we could explode someone who was hit by a Warp field. Things changed after that. I leveled up, got more experience, and my friends learned to expect  me to Charge just about everything that moved. We developed quite the rhythm after that--they would Warp or use Singularity on something and I would look for the glowing blue enemy: instant death! Plus, they can't help but to laugh as I Charge into a group and proceed to Heavy Melee three guys in a row while waiting for Charge to cool down.

I'm getting close to maxing out my Vanguard now, which has me a little depressed. SisterChristmas and I have been through a lot together, you see! We've lost countless matches, but, then again, we've also won a ton. We've charged into groups, thinking they would be easy to wipe, only to realize that the Engineer put down a Turret two seconds prior... "Aww, crap, there's a turret. I'm down!" We've gone toe to toe with Phantoms... That doesn't always work out, but, recently, I've found myself generally wiping them out too, as long as I don't stay too close. In a lot of ways, I'm happy that ME3 won't carry over the characters or experience from the demo--I can start from scratch all over again!

The Vanguard is too awesome. Other classes are just jealous.

Serious answer: The Vanguard, especially at higher levels, is an immense asset to the team. Vanguards can solo-kill phantoms with ease (protip: take the half-Nova evolution and then max out damage in the final fork), and they're also good at getting into problem areas to resurrect teammates, since their primary method of locomotion also happens to kill things. An inexperienced or overconfident Vanguard can, however, turn into a liability. The trick, as with everything else in co-op, is to work as a team: it's up to the Vanguard to not be stupid, and up to the team to back her up or tell her when and where they need her most.

How dare you dishonor and embarrass the Vanguard tribe. You're a disgrace and will forever be known as a heretic. Be gone with you heretic!

Ever since I picked up ME2, I failed as a Vanguard. Well, at least until the ME3 Demo.
I started the demo as a sentinel, but my damn tech armor wasn't working as I remembered from ME2, so I quickly tried each class. I wen through all, not exactly finding my niche, of course not trying the vanguard due to my bias against them.
Well, I tried one on Day 2 of the demo, and boy did my play experience change from good to amazing. Bronze for a vanguard is like playing the game on casual. Playing as a Human Vanguard, I have soloed Bronze more than once.
The difference between a good and bad anything, not just vanguard, is knowing priorities and how to kill. I go around with a Phalanx and major in the biotics part of Vanguard. Guardians? Charge them; most of the time they are stunned and you can headshot them to death.
Vanguards are a very positional class, more than what I have experience with the others. Three things I prioritize the enemies, and yes it does change from battle to battle, are: Teammates (abilities and weaknesses), Self-preservation (Can I take him/If I dont will I die), and Position in the group.
One key thing to remember is everyone plays differently. Just because somebody is using an Infiltrator, doesn't always mean hes using a sniper, and yes I've seen a great sniperless infiltrator.
So remember kiddies, keep your guns holstered, the vanguards are in town. Well now they are in the neighboring town, but still stop trying to shoot into thin air, we are already beside you.

MVP player of the match isn't decided by score, the players know who did what, and even if they can't see their vanguard working their ass, they can easily read the long list of names the vanguard is flanking elsewhere.

Sometimes the vanguard is the MVP, sometimes is the adept, etc score is nothing.

What does everyone recommend for the Vanguard when it comes to Charge level 4? Hitting more enemies, or more power/damage?

As always: Decide based on your playstyle.

Personally, I go for more damage at 4 on the grounds that I then plant a big nova!

Guardians: Shockwave, pretty much staggers them long enough to kill them.

Turrets: Shoot from cover for a second or two -> Charge -> Heavy Melee -> Charge

Damage.  Casting Nova takes care of multiple enemies.

Personally, I like to take the half-Nova evolution--I can cast it twice (damage nerf compensated for in final evolution), and by the time I've done that, I can Charge again.

So unless I need to Shockwave some pesky Guardians or something, I'm constantly rocking the Charge/Nova combo.  It makes matches really, really loud.  Lots of screaming and kaboom.
