What's with the comparisons between ME3 and GoW? The gameplay mechanics may have some similiarity to them, but that doesn't make them comparable games.

One's bright, colourful and well written (once you ignore the hiccups every now and then), the other is dark, grey and gritty with nothing but beefy tank men in rather useless armour considering they keep having their heads uncovered.

Of course that's just my opinion. Whatever GoW-tards see in it is their business. Just don't bring it into ours.

GoW-tards? Really?

When will people realise that enjoying shooters doesn't automatically make you some hyperactive ******?

The sad part is 90% of the hate towards shooters is because of people hating on Call of duty.

Anyone with any experience with a TPS game should have no issues whatsoever with the cover system.

Not really. The system is noticeably flawed.

Gears of War's story and characters are completely different than Mass Effect's. Comparing them makes no sense. But combat wise it's clear that BioWare had to draw from the successful third-person shooter to create a fun combat system, while implementing their own touch, of course.

For instance the cover system of Mass Effect has gotten immensely better in 3, and better happens to coincide with 'being like Gears'. The melee attacks could take a page from Gears, as could the awkward stomp animations when you get executed in multiplayer(curb stomp animation, anyone?) Active reload is very much Gears' baby, and should not be imitated by any other game. So in the zone of combat mechanics, ME3 could be much more like Gears and it would be better for it.

And yes, Khran1505, I'm a GoW-******, I love that series and Mass Effect. So bite me.

[EDIT] And please for the love of all hell, can we get better AI teamates? Only Garrus in both ME1 & 2 has actually killed an enemy without my help, the others have floundered about being useless and waiting for me to use their powers while mine are on cooldown.

Definitely, this.

I mean, I have on occasion seen Garrus or Miranda go absolutely Rambo on a group of enemies and tear them to pieces, 9/10 times they just walk out into the open and die.

My squadmates are actually pretty good at killing people when I play ME2 (and yes, I play on Insanity). Although there are those occasions where they stupidly get themselves killed.

Use Miranda and Thane.  Thane rips a head shot every 10 - 15 seconds and Miranda's warp is lethal.

If the demo is any indication that's happening. Garrus and Liara have saved me from dying a few times already.

Here is why gameplay isn't as good as Gears. Key mapping in ME3:

Foreward: W key

Backward: S key

Left: A key

Right: D key

Cover, sprint, use item, round corner, hurdle object, combat roll, pick your nose, text your friends, make sandwich, kill the Reapers, start a new game, quick save, quick load, enable romance option: Space key

Gears (and most cover based shooters) uses the same button for cover, hurdle, sprint, and roll as well. The difference is in how they are tweaked in a way that makes more sense and your character does what you want him to do. Moar buttenz would be all well and good, but the primary complaint (for me and my friends, at least) is how the cover system in mass3 can be tricky to work with - moreso than most shooters with an identical control scheme.

I don't really get the complaining about how so many functions are mapped to one button (like in Gears you press A to roadie run, take cover, roll, mantle), I don't actually have many problems with it; the only instance in Gears I have a problem with it is when I'm in a hectic gnasher duel, try to roll away and end up sticking to some cover behind me and then get blasted to pieces a moment later.

...but apart from that it works fine. ME's only real problem with cover is that getting Shepard to stick to it is a pain since the distance isn't long enough, plus IIRC Bioware wanted to make the animations look more realistic at the expense of fluidity which Gears goes for instead but has much more snappy animations instead.

For me Mass Effect is more about the powers than the guns. I get so bored by running and shooting in Gears of War. As an adept player I love the biotic combos and I don't really want to use my gun except when necessary. Gears of War doesn't have any of that interplay with biotic/tech abilities etc.. so instantly even if polished loses my interest.

Agreed, I hate it when my squadmates fire off a few shots then stay in cover for the rest of the battle.

The sad part is 90% of the hate towards shooters is because of people hating on Call of duty.

And the ironic thing is, in my experience, most fans of other shooters (Halo, GoW, Battlefield) also dislike Call of Duty.

Anyway, many people have brought up biotic powers. To me, that's irrelevant. I'll take excellent shooter gameplay over mediocre shooter gameplay with biotic powers.

Agreed. I hope to god they aren't trying to make ME3 more similar to GOW or other popular shooters. The ME series has always been about more than mindless shooting. Shooters,to me, are all interchangable -ME series is the exception.  Many who love the game, do so because of the character development and the immersion of story. And although those other games have their own things to offer, ME stands out to me because of its RPG elements.

Why wouldn't you want ME to have gameplay as smooth as Gears of War while retaining the other aspects of the series that makes it great? Best of both worlds and all that...

Bioware should add in a brand new gun named the "Lancer" which has a chainsaw on the end of it.

Then, the first time you use it it permanently breaks.

I understand wanting it to have smooth gameplay, but what I've gathered from the trailers and demo, is that Bioware is focusing more on action, which I hope isn't the case.

If you take gameplay from ME, you're still left with story, characters and some rpg elements. If you do the same with GoW, you're left with... nothing. What a big suprise it is then that GoW's focusing on (and perfecting) its only trade.

You're free to disagree, of course.

Gears didn't even do gameplay very well lol.

dumbing down the RPG elements like the first ME doesnt help it to make ME3 any different from Gears of war.

heck it even uses the same engine as gears of war 3.

Alot of games use the unreal engine you know... http://en.wikipedia....Unreal_Engine_3

I have no real problem with Gears. Never could get into the series but I have no problem with it. Honestly though if you want ME3 to be a clone of Gears, why not just go play Gears? I like the combat in ME3, it works for the game. Sure Gears has a good combat system too, but that works for it. I think Bioware did a good job of making their own system. Plus ME3 is more than just combat. Its fine if thats what you play it for, but its not only what I'm playing for. I'd rather not see the exact same combat system that gears has in ME3. Variety is the spice of life.
