See, an unlocking system is made to unlock something. In which case it unlocks a different character, now you say its only a shape, so what? Its still something people want, so its locked to create a sense of progression and gaining. Why? Because people judge everything based on looks, and not skills. hah, good joke.ed87 wrote...
Whereas having 2 different characters only seperated by gender seems very superficial, and redundant with the unlocking system
Male AND Female = Redundant?

Human Infiltrators: Tactical Cloak, Sticky Grenade, Cryo Blast.
Now imagine if either gender was given Incinerate (ex.) instead of Cryo Blast. A thread (likely multiple threads) would be created questioning the difference, and it wouldn't be pretty. Wheter arguing and/or complaining which gender should have what, or stating that they should have been equal in the first place. And oddly, they would kind of have a point.

The point here people is that they dont want the male and female to be unlocked seperately because some people dont like playing one or the other. In my case i took a female character because i wanted (whatever the cross between tech and adept is called) and the only option available was female human. I've since unlocked the male human for it, but i dont really see the point of switching over after doing all that work.
When you have a lvl 15 male Soldier and unlock the female version, she is lvl 15, too.
So I don't see the problem.
It's still like wearing thrilling hats in TF2.

Well, that does make sense, when they are simply that, a gender option with no skill differences, both should be available at start. But there's also this:Damien Nightwind wrote...

But I agree that you shouldn't be "forced" to start playing as either gender, like you described. I get that, yes.kumquats wrote...

Exactly. There are gender options in multiplayer for the same reason there are gender options in the single player, even if it is binary. Duh.vladgd wrote...
my theory.
in the single player game, you can play a male or female version of sheppard. in the multiplayer, they give you male and female human options since people have preference to one or the other.
It WOULD be great if you didn't have to unlock genders of species tho.

I want it to just be an option, it would allow a higher chance at unlocking the other classes, instead of something identical statistically.
I think this is the biggest thing I dislike about it. Aesthetics be damned it's annoying that you statistically have a much higher chance of unlocking something you already have unlocked but with adifferent coat of paint insead of something actually new and differnt (not even taking into consideration the rarity disparity of such things). Gender really should be a customization option or something if they're going to be statistically identical.

I'd like to see male Quarians and female Turians.
It'd be great to see playable male Quarians, especially after their introduction in ME2, and it'd be nice to see female Turians as well, even though it hasn't been confirmed if the females are fighters or not.

Actually it has been confirmed. In ME2 Garrus talks about a female turian he knew in the millitary. She was the top scout on their ship and she sparred with Garrus (in more than one way;)). So yes female turians are very much fighters and don't have the lore reasons to prevent them from being playable soldiers like the Krogans and Salarians.
On that note there's also no good reason for not having female drell as well.

i think that they should have just had a gender toggle personally- and given Turians and Quarians the toggle as well, rather than trying to pass off male and female humans with exactly the same abilities as different options. What a waste of an unlock.

If both male and female have the same class and abilities, why do you have to work to unlock both?
