The trick really is to learn your chosen class. Anyone can pretend to be US/EU#1 at their class at level 1, just starting out but everybody has a learning period.
So what do you play? How do you tend to play? Providing information like that helps others, help you.

At the moment I'm playing Human Male Adept: Shockwave, Warp, and Singularity. One weapon: Assault rifle.
I would change the Assault rifle for a pistol or SMG as it will give you a big boost in power recharge times (200% with the lightest guns).
As a person who also mainly uses an Adept after putting a single point in each power concentrated on boosting singularity first (on bronze most enemies are unshielded useful for crowd control) and then warp in order to help with shielded and armoured enemies.

What AR are you using? Using just a pistol or SMG would be more weight/recharge effecient but as an adept (with no pistol/smgs unlocked but starter) I find the versatility of the Avenger to be very useful.
I'd focus on warp/singularity as these two are very potent especially on bronze. Also be aware of your biotic combos, if you upgrade your powers to maximize these you can become a very potent damage dealer in addition to a crowd control specialist.

Other than that I dont have much advice. I cleared silver and got to level 10 in silver in a random match with a less than optimal setup. I was just leveling up my soldier so with my preferred infiltrator prob have no probs. it just depends whos in the team. need players who understand the objectives and can prioritise enemies/have situational awareness.

I'm currently playing as a Duo with my GF. We're level 7, playing as a Vanguard and Engineer. Having read what was said in this thread so far, focusing on a single skill is advisable. Unfortunately, we haven't. That said, can anyone suggest a skill to focus on for both classes? My first thought is to focus on Fitness, which may not actually be viable. Please offer any advice you can regarding a build.
First of all, if you mess up you can unlock the other sex and respec.
Anyway, for a vanguard i would focus mainly on charge, assault mastery (for charge cooldown) and fitness (for durability), as that is what will keep you alive reliably. This class relies mainly on 1 active skill so other points should go into passive. Also I would put at least a point in your other abilities, and a few more if you end up liking them
For an engineer I would upgrade drone, incinerate and overload fairly equally - an engineer needs all 3 to survive. The passives aren't as necessary as you aren't a frontline class.
One more piece of advice said above I'd like to reiterate - try to find a way to only take 1 weapon into battle, it helps immensely. Probably Pistol for engineer and shotgun with a smart choke for vanguard

I'm using the Mattock. It's a decent enough weapon. I don't have a secondary weapon equipped. But if I must use a pistol instead of the Mattock that Phalanx pistol is also pretty good. I'm using warp and singularity a lot. Shockwave is good enough on rank 2 to be honest. I need it to make those guardians stagger then get in a well placed head shot. It takes practice but the only other way is to flank those guys (which means one team mate as meat bag).

I've played quite a bit of adept now, and pistol is the only way to go as an adept, phalanx on a human, if you get an asari adept and got the carnifex, use that as stasis + headshot will take down any trooper, a phantom, stasis 1 headshot + warp = phantom dead from biotic explosion.
What i've noticed is that people tend to think that weapons kill in multiplayer...which is sooo not true, i see adeps, engineers, infiltrators weighed down by heavy weapons and not being able to use their powers more than once a minute. And these people always end up in the bottom of the score list. Yes this is a coop game, and thus teamwork is required, but imagine if everyone could use their powers once per 2 seconds..biotic explosions, techbursts and easy headshots would rip up any bronze or silver game...gold..well you just gotta be crazy to do that
EDIT: Splelling

I choose mattock and leave other weapon slots empty. What do you think?

I advice only equipping one weapon for classes that depend on their powers. Heck even as a soldier equipping one weapon is useful. You can spam adrenaline rush time after time in quick succession with only the favourite weapon equipped.

Aye, mattock is the best assault rifle, i use it on my sentinel and my soldier..all other classes i use phalanx or carnifex..even my infiltrator lol

I believe silver/gold difficulties require you to form your own team rather than using matchmaker which is bound to put a sub lvl 10 player in the group.
Kinda OT but not true. Just played Silver 3 times with a random group, one level 7 sentinel who quickly levelled up. One full extraction, one partial extraction (one got grenaded right in the last few seconds so there was no time to rez) and one party wipe on wave 10 where the objective we had to hack had an Atlas, a couple of Phantoms, snipers and a turret all covering it.

Avenger is better, atleast in my hands.
Plus it weights LESS than submachine guns and pistols.

On my Krogan soldier I use two weapons, but only because I melee so much that my cooldowns are always up when I need them. Melee an Atlas, say what?

I like the assault rifle for it's versatility. If I've been screwed over due to the other party members dying (thanks to a stupid strategy I've thought of) at least I have a fighting chance. That was the fun of using Mattock. So it's a bit of a dilemma. But I only equip one weapon. It's the Phalanx or Mattock. No other weapon. I like Avenger too but it lacks the accuracy.

Phalanx is the best pistol I've come accross. It's a highly accurate and very powerful weapon. Plus cooldowns are really quick.

Do you have the accuracy upgrade for it? And you can burst fire it too if needed. Note too that if you stay against cover it will have less recoil. I kill those Guardians trough the "eyeslit" with avenger, just fire there and they die.
It's a bit of spraying gun, but it's accurate enough for me. I always felt that I have to shoot in slower rate if I wanted to be accurate with Mattock.
