No, Krogans are pretty under-powered as it is, considering their great strength and "power" within Mass Effect.

Krogan Melee:
Bronze: Fantastic. Play entire rounds with just melee and top the scoreboard. God Mode.
Silver: A handy perk. Wanna play the entire round with just melee? Better hope you got an infiltrator friend to medic you.
Gold: lol. Wait, you're serious? Let me laugh even harder now...

Guessing that you were playing on Bronze OP. Otherwise you wouldn't think krogan melee was overpowered.

This pretty much. If you try to play gold with a melee build I will laugh at you. Then you leave you to die.

I think Krogan are a very viable option in Gold. If you play the soldier and stay in cover while picking off mooks, you will find you have a great durability. Use melee only on stray enemies or if they are closing in on you.

I use a soldier with a Crusader and get very good results from it, carnage, crusader and melee devastate armored elites (brutes, ravagers, pyros...). And also you are not that vulnerable against phantoms. But this is important: A TRUE KROGAN IS A TEAM PLAYER. Stay close to them, keep CC mooks off their flimsy asses and in return they will revive you when you need it and cover you when you charge into small groups. Also, most caster classes will appreciate your talent for drawing fire.

Sigh, if only they'd fix the stunlock...

Krogan on silver is actually fairly viable, as long as you don't go charging into turrets and the like.
Can't comment on Gold, haven't play that much, but I imagine not meleeing and pretending you're a human soldier that can't roll works nicely, seeing as you get about twice to three times as much durability.
