I'm ever so slightly worried that ME3 might be the biggest screw-up this side of Duke Nukem Forever. Now, while I'm not usually this far in the negative, it does occasionally glance across my mind.
The pressure really is on Bioware for this one. While ME1 had no pressure due to it being released in 2007 (the pre-COD era), there was no push for making money hard and fast. As such, they could experiment and create what was, at its time, a great game. It would be rose-tinted to deny that ME1 has aged. While the story holds up (possibly better than ME2's story), the game play has aged. ME2 was in the beginning of the COD-era. As such, while it wasn't that affected, it clearly was hit by the advances of the COD effect.
We could create a whole other thread covering that, however. ME3 is now in the mass-marketing era. Whether you call me conspiracy theorist or not, it would be impossible to deny EA has pushed for certain, more casual elements in the game. While this is clearly just good business and can't really be looked on as a point of blame, it does raise concerns. ME1 was great because it was a game with no expectations. ME3 is very, very heavily expected to be good.
Perhaps it's just a part of following the hype and believing what the devs say 100%. I'd also say that I have very high expectations of ME3. This push, and want for the "ultimate game" may just come out as being ME3's failing point.
Maybe some of it comes from here. It's hard to read a thread without seeing how someone thinks Bioware has ruined everything and how Shepard now only has one liners as his whole dialogue. While these are clearly hyperbole, it does somehow wriggle into my mind. The lack of dialogue choice in the demo (I do realise that the devs have explained this, but I can't be certain until I see it) does create a sense of fear for how the story of ME3 plays out.
I want Mass Effect 3 to succeed and live up to its hype. But there is something in the back of my mind telling me it may all go wrong. It all hangs in the balance till the game hits.
What do you think?
