So, I decided to start choosing the 5000 credits option, hoping to get my Turian I've wanted for the past couple days. However, why am I unlocking characters I already have?

I mean really, my last unlock? Human Male Soldier. Seriously? We start with that!

Recruit packs don't contain uncommon items all the time. They're about as rare as Rare items are to Veterans.
Grind and hit some Veterans. Recruits won't get you far.

I've done that too. Same thing. Spent 40,000 credits, between a couple games each, and got the same unlocked female. I was getting tired of grinding so much, because half the time the leader logs out if he dies, and we don't retain our experience or credits earned. It just goes back to the Lobby. So, I decided to try for the smaller ones. And experienced a constant repeat of characters.

Recruits are, as said in their description, designed to provide upgrades to the base (or "vanilla") weapons and classes. They will almost always come with an upgrade to a starting weapon or class. Even merely getting a Phalanx out of them is nigh-impossible.

I've gotten some decent equipment from them. But still, point really was that I was given classes over and over, that I already have. Rare or not, that shouldn't happen. I shouldn't even be getting an unlock for the starting character. :S

Kind of trivial to complain about it at this point. Its a demo. None of this will carry over to the game when its released. Everyone will have to start from scratch again.

Even when you get a character that you already have in a recruit pack you get 12000 xp for it and unlock a further appearance change.

I know this. That's not what I'm complaining about. I'm complaining about unlocking something the AI should know I already have.

What you are getting are extra customization options for the classes. In addition to this, you also get bonus xp just for getting the item.
Each class can be upgraded quite a bit, even up to the color of lights on the character (Black armor and red lights looks awesome.)

Save up for Veteran Packs and keep at it, eventually you will get what you want.

When you get a character class/race you already have it gives you an xp boost and unlocks more options in the armour customisation menu.
