I don't get it. I'm still trying to work out this headset I got that I may or may not have to switch out.

I see the speaker thing under my name....I can hear other people...volume is up... I'm like... hiiiiiiii! and no one says anything.

Hit the xbox button, go to preferences and then voice and make sure you're not muted.
(I think that's the right order! I know it's at least very close.)

Did you check to see if the mic on your headset has it's own power button?

eta: I just remembered that ours wasn't working right this morning and it ended up being the router. If you check your connection and that is the problem it will tell you what to try.  It was totally weird - the only thing it affected was voice chat.

Make sure your voice communication isn't set to Friends Only. Go to the System Setting and then Privacy and see what is listed under the Not Allowed and Friends Only privacy options. If Voice and Test is under one of these headings then change it to Everyone and it should work then.

Go spend a couple hundred bucks on a decent turtle beach. Problem solved.

Do a quick test of the mic by going into message and record a voice message, if you can not hear yourself when previewing the message you have one of 2 things going on;

1) Your headset is set to mute, to check this flick the switch on the part that connects to the pad (old style headset) or part way up the wire (new style headset)
2) Your mic appears to be broken

Maybe they don't want to talk to you?
