This system is one of those which can be good or bad. A truely random system, like the one we have, can be horribly irritating because of repeat unlocks.
Small revisions (more likely since the game went gold)
1) Simply make the program less random, and help even out unlocks over all the classes/weapons. Have repeat unlocks less likely, and spread out unlocks. Having a V M-8 Avenger is quite annoying not only because i never use it, but because it makes little sense, out of the 6 guns i have, to have 4 unlocks for that one and only 2 or 3 for the rest of all of them.
2) Have unlocks porportional to the classes/weapon types you play with. You play Infiltrator more, you get more Infiltrator unlocks. It would also help to base it off of recent play, like during that day or week, because once people play Soldier for a few months and get bored, they are still going to get soldier unlocks most of the time. Not saying that if you play only one class you only get that class's unlocks, maybe if its in the top class/weapon type you play, you get that class's unlocks 40-50% of the time.
Complete Revisions (less likely since the game has gone gold)
1) Obviously the store-system is prefered. Simply pick and choose. Not much to say here.
2) class/weapon based unlock system. Kills with that class/weapon mean more unlocks for that class/weapon (or weapon type). Like battlefield or COD.
I would prefer to have one of the complete revisions to the unlock system, either one being better than even a semi-random system, but seeing as how they are so unlikely its only meaningless fantasies at this point in game production.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents. Demo is great past that, personally I have been seduced by the Vanguard, and have played little else. Anyone else try and use a pistol with him so he can Bio charge people (ridiculously) faster? Seems like I am the only one, and with a scope the standard pistol works like the M8 would. DPS is about the same, but then again, I have been playing on Bronze most of the time.
Possible fixes to the Random-Unlock system.

Agreed. I don't think it will be possible to completely change the random unlock system into a traditional store at this point (though that would have been the best solution if feedback could have been presented months ago), I do support the idea of coding the boxes to be more likely to unlock stuff in the categories you actually use (i.e. if you are using an Infiltrator, you get more Infiltrator stuff, if you use ARs, you get more AR items, etc).

If they're going to have the random packages they need to have it more organized, because unlocking the same thing ten time you don't use/want doesn't make me want to play the game.
I was lucky I got what I wanted early on but it's not fun hoping you get what you want/need.

There needs to be different categories like Infiltrator Veteran Packs, Soldier Veteran Packs etc., where chances are getting gear towards your class is increased.
