In the demo on the Xbox, on the screen where you choose different characters that you've created, there is a greyed out option titled "Promote" that apparently uses the X button.

Does anyone know what this is for? It doesn't appear to be useable in the demo as far as I can tell.

Is it possible they become a War Asset in the single player campaign, and then you get to start over with that particular character?

It allows them to be used as a War Asset in the campaign. We don't know what happens to that character after they've been promoted.
