The dumbing down of games in general saddens me greatly.

I know you meant to say, 'Offering the broader gaming community a more inclusive and satisfying interactive experience.'

No, i meant dumbing down.

Edit - and before you start crying and furiously sprinting to the defense of ME, i was talking in general terms. I'm still on ME1 and absolutely love it.

Anybody who thinks ME2 was ''dumbed down'' from ME1 has no knowledge of and taste in good games.

Seriously, people. ME1 was a wreck. It was not a good RPG, it was a terrible shooter, and I'm glad the people at Bioware pulled their heads out and fixed the franchise by making ME2 an incredible experience.

You don't understand its a marketing strategy.
New players play ME3 they are like, wow!! good game story... then they hear how much better ME2 was so play it and think how was the one which started all this and buy ME too.EA get more money everyone happy.
Best order of entry for new players
1.ME3 ok
2.ME2 good
3.ME best
its what Casey meant

Playing it now and tbh, you're talking out of your ass. Been into rpgs since i was a wee nipper and it is a quality game. The only problem is that some of the side quests use the same type of buildings, but the story is so strong i am willing to overlook that.

You are the one without taste tbfh, hilariously  so.

I'm sorry, but i have to LOL when i see these threads, anybody would have thought you needed to be a genius to play ME1.
I loved ME1 but the inventory system was just flat out broken, they streamlined it in ME2, yes, and maybe they went a bit too far, but it was still better than having to sort through a ton of worthless crap.

It has the exact same meaning as "Dumbed Down". So I'd go with from the OP.

ME2 was dumbed down. That doesn't mean it was worse, just that we went from 3296236236 talent trees to a much more modest number.

IMO, ME2 is actually an example of good streamlining so as opposed to say, Dragon Fail 2 which simplified things it didn't need to (e.g. removing armour penetration).

Mass Effect wasn't intelligent. The RPG genre was never intelligent either, unless you think that flicking through the BGII manual to comprehend the way that magic works is difficult.

Out of interest, what is wrong with the inventory system in ME1. Am using it now and haven't had any problem at all, in any way, shape or form?

You clearly see where your stuff is, it's seperated and by class, what's the issue, am i missing it?

We need new langauge.

We're pretty much talking about increasing or decreasing complexity. And without rhetoric those are neither a good nor bad thing in isolation.

There is lots of it, it consumes a lot of time and achieves very little.

It also lacks basic features like stacking of identical items and sorting.  It is much better on the PC, but it's still a hassle.

The issue is the rediculous amount of superfluous items that serve no purpose other than medigel. Take out the 2 or 3 best  weapons, upgrades, ammo  from your inventory and i can pretty much guarantee everthing else is useless.

so if its streamlined it consumes less time and achieves even less.

saying it again..there needs to be 2 forums for pc and console,as pc gamers dont get that console gamers are getting a game catered to thier standards.
and console gamers dont get that pc gamers want the same.

We have gone from a game with open galaxy exploration to one where you have little reason to visit star systems that do not have a mission in them.

This is just false. You still need to visit planets to get hold of resources, and you still find anomalies on planets you scan randomly.

Platonian wrote...
The mapping of lost worlds, the resources, investigations and on planet combat have all gone.

Mapping? You mean the joy of the Mako not being able to get any further up that mountain? And the discovery of yet another prefab building / cavern / ship? Truly, the game needs more generic maps. Oh yeah, we got those in DA2, and that was a great sucess...

Platonian wrote...
The Citadel Presidium (?) is now a video sequence with the admiral where you see what they could have done anew had exploring cityscapes still been important to the game.

Those lazy Bioware hacks. How dare they give us a different part of the Citadel to explore.

Platonian wrote...
The cities have shrunk too

Cities? What cities? Noveria (the port itself) is the only thing in ME1 (other than the Citadel)  that might qualify as a city, and that's absolutely tiny in comparison with Illium (even more so if you have Shadow Broker).

Platonian wrote...
and combat consists far more of ribbons which we thread through, rather than open areas to fight in.

Yeah, because all those generic prefab buildings and caverns and ships didn't have the same basic structure or crates strewn everywhere. They were so much more open, man.

So, not one of your so-called 'arguments' has any validity whatsoever. Good work.

What you really need is two forums: one for people who are ****s and one for people who aren't.

Although i think i understand what you mean, i chop and change and love getting new loot and comparing items. I'm an rpg diehard though so loot is like crack for me ^_^

Oh yeah, ME1 button mashing was sooooooooooo much more intellectual than ME2 button mashing.  I dream of cruising the galaxy picking up lost trinkets.

this is my point exactly

this is what teachers must suffer everyday.
only to have to listen to kids after failing thier exams blame thier teaching style on thier future prospects.

and yes..at the basic level that is what the arguements are ALWAYS about.
console vs pc isnt about the users, its about the standards each expects.
