i was just wondering if anyone who knows or has read the mass effect script could give me a yes or no answer to if shepard is still a spectre or if he gets his status back in mass effect 3.

I am pretty sure it depends on whether if you saved the council in Mass Effect 1. I could be wrong.. Anyway, if you did, then they'll restore your spectre status in Mass Effect 2, thus yes, you will [most likely] be a spectre in the third game.

I was wondering about this as well, Anderson says "You WERE a council Spectre" when they were discussing him going to the council. Past tense. Did he get his status stripped because of what he did in Arrival, something else we will no doubt not understand with the exclusion of Shepard's trial

I think that the demo only reflects a new player's perspective. I am sure any imports will show differences from the start.

I remember one of the developers saying something along the lines that Spectre Status would play more of a role in ME3 than it did in ME2 ( maybe being Spectre will make it easier for Shepard to get certain characters to join the war effort and maybe it will make it more difficult for certain other characters ). I suppose the big question is if you killed of the original Council in ME1 and did not re-gain your Spectre status in ME2 can you re-gain it in ME3.

Unless I missunderstood, in the demo audio files there´s also this line in present tense.

There is dialogue that points to Shepard being a Spectre or at least referring to himself as a spectre.

@Anders

You can kill the council and still get spectre status, Anderson needs to be councilor though.

I doubt you necessarily need to have gained back Spectre status in ME2 to get it in ME3; it'd likely have been stripped in the aftermath of Arrival, anyway. Once the Reapers show up, though, Shepard will have been vindicated and refusing to reinstate his Spectre status would just be petty as all getout. The privilages of a Spectre would be incredibly helpful in dealing with the various issues that Shepard will need to put to rest whilst uniting the galaxy.

The entire Spectre Role seems really diminished from what I can tell. It was a big thing in me1, but throughout the series I felt your still a subordinate to the Alliance. Kind of made me wonder how spectres ever got anything done, or how that position could be viewed as it does, (left hand of the council, or was it right?) So for the alliance to be able to ground shepard- if you were reinstated back in me2; its kinda like bioware has to give on something. Either being a spectre doesn't mean anything, because there still subordinate to whatever organization they came from; and the buildup of the position in Me1 was; all crap. Or, they retcon it in, that you were never reinstated.

Shepard wasn't subordinate to the Alliance at all after being inducted to the Spectres; he was merely provided a ship, subordinates, and resources by them. The Alliance was only able to ground Shepard in ME1 because the Council agreed with the motion, and it's likely the same in ME3 because the Council won't want to be associated with the eradication of a Batarian colony system. For the most part, though, Shepard does things no soldier would really be able to get away with all throughout both games, whether officially a Spectre at the time or not.

You have to remember Shepard is the FIRST HUMAN Spectre, its not so much that the Alliance controls him its that the Alliance wants him too put on a jolly good show.

Shepard just massacred 300.000 batarians and destroyed a mass relay, consider his specter status revoked.

Ashley / Kaiden are also Spectres. This could potentially play some role in the story.

They become spectres middle of ME3, not initially.  Its not as big of deal as you may think either.

And in the begining Ashley is plastered with Spectre symbols and DEFINETLY out of Uniform.... Unless Alliance Dress code for females includes going to Miranda school for Mirandifcation

S1?  I'm pretty sure that signifies her place on the Normandy, not Spectre.  It might have been removed in latest models too, I haven't checked.

But she is most definitely not a spectre at the start, neither is Kaidan.

I'm not about to get into another fight about her uniform either.

Then you throw Ash/Kaiden out the airlock and the council sends a spectre after you. It's SHEPCEPTION
